Rep. Snyder Reacts to the New State Budget

On Tuesday, Governor Evers delivered a virtual Budget Address, outlining his spending priorities for our state. I am encouraged by some of the priorities in his budget proposal such as: broadband expansion, support for K-12 education, and childcare funding. However, the fact of the matter is that this budget proposal also contains non-fiscal and partisan policy initiatives. Additionally, this budget is based on math that takes into account revenue sources that do not exist and as a result, irresponsibly increases spending beyond what we can afford. We should spend within our means – just as families across Wisconsin do when they budget out their finances – rather than base our budgeting political gimmicks meant only to generate headlines.

Last session, I voted for record investments in broadband expansion and K-12 education all while keeping taxes down and spending within our means. I am confident that this budget can get to a similar stage but only after a lot of work to improve it.

Vote to Protect Small Businesses from Tax on PPP Loans

On Tuesday, I voted to protect small businesses across Wisconsin that accepted Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans from an unexpected $431 million tax by passing Assembly Bill 2. The PPP loans were part of the Federal CARES Act passed in 2020 to help businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Businesses across Wisconsin have faced unprecedented struggles during the pandemic. Last year many businesses took out PPP loans to stay afloat. These loans helped keep Wisconsinites employed throughout the pandemic. Hitting small businesses with an unexpected tax on funds given to help them survive during a pandemic is simply not fair.  I proudly voted to align Wisconsin law with federal law and protect small businesses from this surprise tax hike.

Assembly Bill 2 ensures that PPP loans will not be considered taxable income and that expenditures made using PPP funds can be deducted for qualified expenses.

The legislation passed the Senate and was signed by the Governor. Do not hesitate to contact my office if you have any questions about how this might affect your business.

Congratulations!

Congratulations to the Central Wisconsin Storm girls hockey team! After qualifying for the state tournament, the Storm unfortunately lost a close game in overtime of the tournament semi-finals earlier this week.

Congratulations to all the girls for their hard work and making it so far!

The Storm is a co-op team consisting of hockey players from D.C. Everest, Marathon, Merrill, Mosinee, Wausau East, and Wausau West High Schools.
