Looking ahead: Working together to rebuild Wisconsin

As the Legislature heads into a holiday recess after a long, sometimes frustrating legislative session, many citizens I have talked with around the 81st District have a lot of questions. Why do so many legislators seem to be focusing on their own priorities instead of what the people of our state want? How can we put aside our differences and move forward together to create sustainable jobs, support our children's future, and rebuild Wisconsin's economy? These questions are the focus of my recent year-end column, which you can find on my website here: http://legis.wisconsin.gov/assembly/81/considine/news/columns-articles/looking-ahead-working-together-to-rebuild-wisconsin/. I hope that in the new year, we can work across the aisle to do what's best for our state.

Holiday Capitol office hours

In accordance with designated state holidays, my Capitol office will be closed on the following dates:

  • December 24th-25th (Christmas Eve and Christmas Day)

  • December 31st-January 1st (New Year's Eve and New Year's Day)

Grant opportunities for community organizations

Family Court and Drug Court Training Assistance Grant

The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) envisions a nation where our children are healthy, educated, and free from violence. If they come into contact with the juvenile justice system, the contact should be rare, fair, and beneficial to them. To meet this vision, this program will focus on supporting training and technical assistance that helps states, state courts, local courts, units of local government, and Indian tribal governments develop, maintain, and enhance drug courts for substance-abusing adults who are involved with the family court due to child abuse and/or neglect issues. The deadline to apply is February 8th, 2016. More information is available here: http://www.grants.gov/web/grants/view-opportunity.html?oppId=280149

Community Technical Assistance Grant

The state Board for People with Developmental Disabilities (BPDD) is looking for organizations committed to helping people with disabilities build full lives in their community by providing them with individualized services. Recipients of the Community Technical Assistance Grant will receive:

  • Extensive on-site and remote technical assistance/coaching for one year including:

    • One 3-day on-site visit from a consultant focused on establishing a braided service model that includes customized employment and integrated community support

    • Practical information about program structure and service coordination, establishing rates, and helping job seekers with disabilities

  • Group training, face-to-face meetings, modeling/field work with staff for service implementation

  • A $2,000 incentive payment to support the implementation of the initial phase of your organization’s action/transformation plan.

To apply or for more information, please visit the program page. Two organizations will be selected to receive the grant. The deadline to apply is Monday, December 28th. If you have any questions contact Ann Sievert at ann.sievert@wisconsin.gov or 608-267-9897.

Dane County Environmental Council Grant

The Dane County Environmental Council awards grants every year to nonprofit community organizations, school districts, and municipalities. Grants ranging from $250 to $2,500 are available for conservation projects that enhance Dane County’s natural resources and benefit county residents. There are two categories of grants:

  • The Capital Equipment Program will provide funding to assist with equipment purchase, rental, or lease; construction of conservation measures; or maintenance of previously constructed conservation measures that improve, protect, and enhance land and water resources in Dane County.

  • The Community Partners Program provides funding for small projects that promote environmental education, conservation, and restoration.

The deadline for 2016 proposals is Friday, February 26, 2016. All applications must be made electronically, along with one paper copy. For more information, please visit: https://www.countyofdane.com/commissions/environmentalcouncil/.
