Legislative Updates

State Budget

The Joint Finance Committee's last meeting was Friday, May 29th. At that time, the committee voted to cut $250 million from the UW System and eliminate tenure from the state statutes. My Democratic colleagues on JFC also proposed maintaining current funding for the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program and restoring 29.4 science and education staff positions at the DNR, but this motion failed on a 12-4 party line vote as well.

The committee has not yet announced when its next meeting will be, but it will likely be the last one before the bill moves to the full Legislature. We do not know yet whether the Senate or Assembly will take up the bill first, but I have already begun working with my colleagues to determine how we can make this budget more palatable. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to let me know via email at Rep.Considine@legis.wisconsin.gov or phone at (608) 266-7746.

Prevailing Wage Repeal (Senate Bill 49/Assembly Bill 32)

As you may know, SB 49 recently failed to pass out of the Senate Committee on Labor and Government Reform with bipartisan opposition. The bill was then sent to the Committee on Senate Organization, where it may be modified or sent to the floor at a later date. Recently, the Assembly Committee on Labor voted to send AB 32 to the full Assembly for a vote. Neither of these bills has been scheduled at this time. 20-Week Abortion Ban (Senate Bill 179/Assembly Bill 237)

This week, the Assembly Committee on Health and the Senate Committee on Health and Human Services held a joint public hearing on SB 179/AB 237, which would prohibit doctors from performing abortions after 20 weeks. While the Assembly committee has not yet scheduled an executive session on either bill, the Senate committee voted on Wednesday to send SB 179 to the full Senate. From there, it will go to the full Assembly. To follow the progress of AB 237/SB 179, you can sign up for the Legislative Notification Service here: https://notify.legis.wisconsin.gov/login?ReturnUrl=%2f.
