Dear friend, First, I want to say thank you. In just the last two weeks, I have heard from over a hundred of my constituents in the 81st District on Right to Work, the state budget, and a variety of other issues. Whether we agree or not, I am honored that so many of you have reached out to me to share your thoughts and concerns on the issues that matter most to you. I hope to see you at my upcoming district office hours, as well as a UW budget listening session with Sen. Jon Erpenbach, and I look forward to continuing to advocate for you in the Legislature! AB 1 Update As you may know, this week my Republican colleagues on the Assembly Education Committee re-introduced AB 1, the controversial school accountability bill, in the form of a substitute amendment. Despite our numerous requests for a public hearing, the chairman of the committee, Rep. Jeremy Thiesfeldt, was prepared to fast-track it out of committee today in an executive session. Fortunately, due to a lack of support, Rep. Thiesfeldt has cancelled the planned committee vote on AB 1. However, it is likely that this bill will be reintroduced again later. I assure you that I will do whatever I can to keep you updated on its status, and I look forward to continuing our work to protect and improve our public education system.
Right to Work Update My first speech to the Assembly Last Thursday, I was honored to deliver my first speech on the Assembly floor during the debate on Senate Bill 44 (SB 44), the "Right to Work" bill. In it, I shared my personal experience as a farmer raised in a highly conservative family, who didn't feel unions were important - until I became a teacher, and my union saved my career and my family's livelihood. Final Vote on SB 44 After nearly 24 hours of debate, SB 44 passed the Assembly on a party-line vote. I voted against SB 44, because I do not believe Right to Work is the way to create the family-supporting jobs Wisconsin citizens so desperately need, and I heard from an overwhelming amount of you that feel the same way. Now, I hope we can shift our focus back to the state budget and the issues that matter to you, like improving public education and protecting our environmental resources. Friday Office Hours: Merrimac, North Freedom Tomorrow, Friday, March 13th, I will be holding my in-district office hours in Merrimac and North Freedom. Feel free to come by to ask questions, discuss the budget and other legislative issues, or just say hello!
My next office hours will be held Friday, March 20th from 9:30 AM-11:30 AM at Grandma Mary's Cafe in Arena, 12:00-2:00 PM at Leystra's Venture Restaurant in Sauk City, and 2:30-4:30 PM at the Blue Spoon Cafe in Prairie du Sac. Stay tuned for future sessions in Baraboo and Portage!
You're Invited: UW Budget Listening Session with Sen. Jon Erpenbach This Saturday, March 14th, I will be hosting a UW Budget listening session at UW-Baraboo/Sauk County with Sen. Jon Erpenbach from 10:00 AM-2:00 PM. Students, faculty, staff, and community members are invited to share their thoughts about the proposed $300 million budget cuts, the transition to a public authority, and other state budget provisions affecting the UW System.
We look forward to a productive discussion on how we can support UW-Baraboo/Sauk County during the budget process and put our university community first! If you have questions about this listening session, feel free to contact me at Rep.Considine@legis.wisconsin.gov or (608) 266-7746.
Save SeniorCare Petitions: Deadline March 20th Thank you to all who have signed the petition to Save SeniorCare or circulated their own! (If you haven't yet, you can sign the petition on my legislative website here.) So far, I have received signatures from over 50 constituents, with even more contacting me to voice their support for this essential program. The original petition deadline was March 1st, but due to your overwhelming support of this program, my Assembly Democratic colleagues and I have decided to extend the deadline to obtain signatures.
In an effort to ensure we deliver all signatures to the Governor in a timely manner after they have been collected, please return all signatures to my office by Friday, March 20th. Petitions can be mailed to me at P.O. Box 8952, Madison, WI 53708 or delivered in person to Room 412 North in the Capitol. Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns!
