Legislative update: State of the State, Mental Health committee

State of the State

For the past year, my Democratic colleagues and I have worked hard to introduce legislation that would fully fund our public schools, create sustainable jobs and support Wisconsins working families, improve broadband and health care access in our rural communities, and more. In this week's 2016 State of the State address, Governor Walker claimed to have addressed many of these issues, but the reality is that the measures we have seen from the Governor and my Republican colleagues in the Legislature are simply not enough. It is not enough to talk about investing in public education when our schools have seen severe budget cuts in recent years due to the vouchers given to private school students. It is not enough to claim to support higher education when our UW System has lost hundreds of millions of dollars in state aid. These cuts have resulted in an unprecedented talent exodus from Wisconsin. It is not enough to say our state is doing just fine while our roads are quite literally crumbling and our state correctional institutions are unsafe. The people of our state deserve better. I am hopeful that in the coming year, the Republican legislative majority will work with Democrats to help improve life in our state for all, not just those who can afford it.

Mental Health committee

I am proud to announce that I was recently named the ranking Democrat to the Assembly Committee on Mental Health Reform. I have enjoyed sharing my experience and ideas as a member of the Mental Health Committee so far this session, and I feel honored to take on this role. We have a significant opportunity to work together to expand on the availability and quality of mental health care for our fellow citizens. I look forward to collaborating with my colleagues on the committee to create true, sustainable improvements in Wisconsins mental health system.

Grant opportunity: Transitional housing assistance for victims of domestic violence

Closing date: Feb. 24, 2016

More information: http://www.grants.gov/web/grants/view-opportunity.html?oppId=280650

The Transitional Housing Assistance Grants for Victims of Sexual Assault, Domestic Violence, Dating Violence, and Stalking Program focuses on a holistic, victim-centered approach to providing transitional housing services that move survivors into permanent housing. Awards support programs that provide assistance to victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, and/or stalking who are in need of transitional housing, short-term housing assistance, and related support services. Successful transitional housing programs provide a wide range of optional services that reflect the unique needs of victims and promote victim choice and autonomy. Transitional housing programs may offer support services, such as counseling, support groups, safety planning, advocacy, child care, employment services, transportation vouchers, and referrals to other agencies. Trained staff work with survivors to help them determine and reach their goals for permanent housing.
