Happy Earth Day!

On Monday, April 22nd, we celebrated Earth Day in Wisconsin and around the world. This year, the Earth Day theme is “Protect Our Species,” with a focus on endangered species. Earth Day is an opportunity to recognize the importance of our natural environment and to shine a light on ecological issues.

Wisconsin has a strong connection to Earth Day, which was founded in 1970 by US Senator Gaylord Nelson, who had previously served as our state’s “conservation governor.” Nelson’s inspiration for the observance was prompted by the 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, CA and inspired by the effects of campus activism. His vision was to see people nationwide host “teach-ins” to highlight environmental issues.

He established a small office to support the smaller grass-roots groups organizing local Earth Day events, but rejected a top-down structure as he thought the planning should be completely organic. He said, “Earth Day should plan itself.”  Senator Nelson was later awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his work. Originally US-centric, Earth Day is now observed around the globe on April 22nd in nearly 200 countries.

Campaigns and Elections Committee Update

I am a member of the Assembly Committee on Campaigns and Elections, which met on Tuesday to hear testimony in a public hearing on two bills relating to election laws, Assembly Bills 168 and 64.

Current law requires voters to state their full names and addresses to poll workers in order to obtain a ballot. This law is unaccommodating to voters with certain disabilities or medical conditions that affect their hearing or speaking. To address this issue, the Accessibility Advisory Committee of the Wisconsin Elections Commission submitted a request last month for “…legislative changes to allow voters with disabilities to receive assistance from an election inspector or another individual to satisfy the statutory requirement to state the voter’s name and address before receiving a ballot.”  If passed and signed into law, Assembly Bill 168 will allow voters who have communication limitations to have an assistant or poll official assist them in completing this requirement.  Disability Rights Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Board for People with Developmental Disabilities, and the League of Women Voters all support this proposal.

Assembly Bill 64 provides aid to counties and municipalities for certain special election costs. The committee heard testimony on this bill from Dane County Clerk Scott McDonell, who is also the chair of the Wisconsin County Clerks Association Legislative Committee. He supports AB 64 because unanticipated elections can leave clerks scrambling for funds to pay for them. Clerk McDonell argued that new funding for special election costs would be beneficial across the state, especially in smaller counties that lack in-house election staff and have to contract for that kind of assistance.

Celebrating the Centennial of the 19th Amendment

100 years ago, Wisconsin lawmakers voted to ratify the 19th Amendment to the constitution, which gave women the right to vote nationwide. Wisconsin was the first state to ratify, in June 1919, and just over a year later the amendment was officially added to the Constitution. In order to mark this momentous anniversary, Governor Evers has formed a committee to plan programs and events to educate, involve and engage the people of Wisconsin around this historic milestone.

I am proud to serve as a member of this committee, chaired by Wisconsin’s First Lady, Kathy Evers. Earlier this week, the First Lady hosted the committee’s first meeting. We discussed how to best coordinate our efforts to plan the centennial celebration on Monday, June 10th. Stay tuned for updates about that event. We look forward to properly remembering and honoring the women who fought for the right to vote a century ago.

Drug Take Back Day

Drug Take Back Day is this Saturday, April 27th.  This semi-annual event is sponsored by the Wisconsin Department of Justice and local law enforcement agencies.  The event is a chance for you to clean out your medicine cabinets and to safely dispose of any unused or expired prescription medications, not only for the safety of those in your household, but also because when flushed or poured down the drain medications can contribute to contamination of our water supply.

Items you’ll be able to safely dispose of include controlled and uncontrolled substances, over-the-counter medications, ointments, patches, creams, non-aerosol sprays, vials, and pet medications. If you have sharps, such as an epi-pen, you can visit here to find locations where you can properly dispose of those.  Certain medications, such as ones for cancer treatment or other chronic diseases, can often be donated to the Wisconsin Drug Repository which you can find more information about here.

The nearest drop off locations for residents of the 78th Assembly District for this Saturday’s event are as follows: Walgreens at 7810 Mineral Point Road & 606 Whitney Way (open 24/7); Verona Police Department located at 111 Lincoln Street, Verona from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm; Shorewood Hills Police Department, 810 Shorewood Blvd, Madison from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm; Middleton Police Department, 7341 Donna Drive Middleton, WI (open 24/7).  Other locations can be found here as well as permanent locations if you are unable to take advantage of the event this weekend.

Pinwheels for Prevention

Earlier this week, I had the pleasure of visiting with representatives of the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin as part of Child Abuse Prevention Month. The pinwheels in our photograph represent the bright and carefree childhoods that all children should experience. I deeply appreciate all the great work the Children's Hospital does to meet the needs of kids and families across Wisconsin.

Appropriately, the Legislative Children’s Caucus also met this week. The bipartisan Children’s Caucus seeks to advance evidence-based policies that improve the lives of every Wisconsin child. We heard a presentation from the Wisconsin Alliance for Mental Health about infant and early childhood mental health.

Fun Wisconsin Fact

On April 24, 1954 Hank Aaron, who was playing for the Milwaukee Braves, hit his first home run in the major leagues.  He broke Babe Ruth’s career home record run of 714 twenty years later. Ultimately, Aaron would retire from baseball after playing with the Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves for 21 seasons, and then played for the Milwaukee Brewers for two. He held a 755 home runs record in major league baseball that was held until 2007.  A beloved player, he holds a swath of awards including the record for the most seasons as an All-Star player and has three Golden Glove Awards. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1982 and now resides near Atlanta.
