COVID-19 Update

It is never too late to get your COVID-19 vaccination, and you can even receive a $100 Visa gift card for doing so. Gov. Evers has extended the deadline, meaning you now have until September 19 to take advantage of this incentive. Wisconsinites ages 12 and older are eligible for the incentive, and proof of insurance, I.D., or citizenship are not required to be eligible for the vaccine or the incentive.

In order to receive the $100 Visa gift card, Wisconsin residents will need to fill out the form available at 100.wisconsin.gov. Information submitted will be used for verification, and the cards will be mailed to the individual's Wisconsin address and may take up to six weeks to be mailed to participants. Click here for more information or call (844) 684-1064.

The Emergency Order form Public Health Madison & Dane County continues. This order requires that everyone age 2 and older wear a face covering or mask when in any enclosed building where other people, except for members of the person’s own household or living unit, could be present.

A new ad sponsored by Stop the COVID Spread! Coalition will run on TV and radio throughout Wisconsin this month. The ad features, Pete, a former long-time high school football coach and Pete's doctor, Dr. Heyka, of Bellin Health.  Both are from Oconto, Wisconsin. Click here to view the ad and learn more.

Abortion Access in Jeopardy

On Wednesday, a new Texas law took effect that bans abortion after six weeks of pregnancy. This law allows private citizens to sue anyone who helps a woman obtain an abortion, and does not include exceptions for cases involving rape or incest. The United States Supreme Court refused a request to block this law from going into effect. This is another step toward potentially overturning Roe v. Wade. If the court overturns Roe, abortion would be immediately illegal in Wisconsin and doctors would be subject to felony penalties for providing abortions because Wisconsin still has a criminal abortion ban on our books from 1849.

Abortion is health care, not criminal activity, and should be accessible safely, legally, and without judgment. This is why Senator Kelda Roys and I introduced the Abortion Rights Preservation Act, which would repeal Wisconsin’s criminal abortion ban and preserve the individual right to make personal reproductive healthcare decisions without interference from politicians. The time has come to guarantee access to safe and legal abortion in Wisconsin, no matter what.

State Investment in Transit for Madison and Milwaukee

This week, Gov. Evers announced a $5.2 million investment to the city of Madison for transit services. The investment is supported by the state's American Rescue Plan Act dollars. This will help fill a gap in funding left during the state budget process when Republican legislators voted to cut public transit funding through the State Urban Mass Transit Operating Assistance Program in Milwaukee and Madison by 50 percent over the biennium.

The resources provided will help Madison support continuing transit services for residents to get to work, school and job training, medical appointments, and other activities. I applaud Gov. Evers for making this investment in our city.

Scam Alert: Unemployment Insurance Scams

If you receive a text message regarding unemployment insurance, be cautious about clicking on any links. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) has received reports of a phishing text where imposters pretend to be from the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development (DWD) or a similar agency.

These alarming texts claim that there is a problem with your account and that your benefits will be discontinued if you do not click on the link to update your account ID and password. However, they are imposters trying to get your personally identifiable information to steal your identity and your money. Delete these texts, and do not click on any links.

How to tell if a text message from DWD is official:

-Official text messages from DWD link to my.unemployment.wisconsin.gov

-DWD does not send text messages to claimants to notify them that their profile or claim will be deactivated.

-DWD does not send group text messages.

-Any official text messages from DWD notify the claimant to log on to their Claimant Portal at my.unemployment.wisconsin.gov to view any messages securely.

-Do NOT click on links, enter your user information, or provide any information to suspicious websites or spoofed messages.

If you have questions about the legitimacy of a text you received, DWD provides updates online about current scam reports.

Less for Rx Spotlight: Office of Prescription Affordability

Earlier this month, Gov. Evers and I introduced legislation to reduce the high cost of prescription drugs. The Less for Rx Plan was developed from recommendations of the bipartisan Governor’s Task Force on Reducing Prescription Drug Prices.

One of the bills, LRB 3339, would create the Office of Prescription Drug Affordability. This office would provide oversight and regulation over the pharmaceutical supply chain, and serve as a watchdog for Wisconsin consumers.

Madison 365 recently ran a story about the Less for Rx Plan. Click here to read their story.

Wisconsin Fun Fact

In honor of Labor Day, this week’s fun fact focuses on the labor movement. The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) was founded right here in Madison in 1936. AFSCME was formed out of the Wisconsin State Employees Association (WSEA), which was founded in 1932 to represent approximately 50 Wisconsin civil service employees.

WSEA was launched amid fears of politically based firings within the state, the possible elimination of the civil service and a return to patronage jobs. Arnold Zander, Wisconsin's state personnel administrator, emerged as one of the early leaders of the union. Soon after its formation, WSEA was granted an American Federation of Labor charter as Federal Labor Union 18213.
