Dear Friends and Neighbors,

I hope you have been having a good summer. There are only a few weeks left before children are headed back to school, and the Legislature will be back in session in September.

In this week’s newsletter, you will find information about an exciting proposal called Grow Wisconsin, an announcement regarding the 2017 County Highway PD reconstruction project, and a couple of opportunities to get involved in preserving and protecting our natural resources.

If you have any questions or need assistance with any matter, please feel free to contact my office.

Sincerely,

Lisa Subeck

State Representative

78th Assembly District

Grow Wisconsin

AB 292 would create a “Grow Wisconsin” pilot program in Dane, Rock, and Milwaukee counties. The program would encourage and enable FoodShare participants to purchase fresh and healthy foods for their families while supporting Wisconsin’s farmers.

Earlier this year, Republicans in the Assembly passed a bill that would place significant new restrictions on what FoodShare participants could purchase through the program. Democrats were opposed to this bill and researched alternatives to increase healthy options for FoodShare participants.

In Michigan there is a program called “Double Up Food Bucks” that has seen success in increasing access to healthy, fresh, affordable foods. With the success of that program, my Democratic colleagues on the Public Benefits Reform committee and I have introduced the “Grow Wisconsin” bill which provides additional dollars to support the purchase of healthy and fresh food by matching FoodShare funds spent on fresh, locally-sourced products.

Under the bill, individuals would be able to double their FoodShare purchasing power for Wisconsin-grown fruits, vegetables, and meats, or Wisconsin-made dairy products, either at farmers’ markets or grocery stores already authorized to participate in the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

The bill would also have the Department of Health Services create and submit a report to the legislature that contains recommendations on making changes to the program and whether the program should be expanded statewide.

New Endangered Resources License Plates

Last week, the Department of Natural Resources and the Department of Transportation unveiled the newly designed endangered resources license plate. The new design features a bald eagle, celebrating bald eagles’ recovery at home and the key role Wisconsin played in restoring this majestic bird to our nation’s skies. The Department of Transportation is currently accepting applications for the new plates and will start issuing them on September 1, 2015.

When you purchase the eagle specialty license plate, $25 is given to the Endangered Resources Fund, which pays for work by the DNR's Natural Heritage Conservation staff and partners to protect and restore rare plants and animals and unique natural areas. License plate sales are a critical source of funding for their work.

Adopt a Wisconsin Wildlife Area

State Wildlife Areas are a great place to enjoy the outdoors, and those interested in giving back to their favorite spot can now adopt a wildlife area. Wisconsin State Fisheries Areas, Wildlife Areas, Flowages, Wild Rivers and Riverways provide critical fish and wildlife habitat along with outstanding nature based recreation, and the DNR is seeking the public's help in managing these lands.

Participants will receive a first-hand look at how the department uses management goals to maintain thousands of acres of property throughout Wisconsin and play a key role in enhancing wildlife habitat and recreational opportunities for others to enjoy. Key activities include invasive species control, nest box construction, trail and facility maintenance, and more. All safety and maintenance equipment, training, and certification will be provided by the department.

Those interested in adopting a State Wildlife Area can participate individually, or as part of a group. If you or your organization is interested, please submit an application at the nearest DNR office location. Click here to learn more about adopting a Wisconsin Wildlife Area.

CTH PD (McKee Road) Reconstruction Project Public Involvement Meeting

Next Tuesday, Dane County, the City of Madison and KL engineering will be holding a public involvement meeting for the County Highway PD (McKee Road) 2017 reconstruction project. The proposed project will begin at Meriter Way and extend to Maple Grove Drive. It will consist of reconstructing CTH PD as an urban roadway with four vehicle lanes, two on road bike lanes, curb and gutter, sidewalk, multi-use path, and a raised curb and gutter median. The project will also include construction of a multi-user path bridge that will pass over CTH PD for the Ice Age Junction Path and Ice Age National Scenic Trail. Additional project work incudes intersection improvements, extension of the box culvert just west of Muir Field Road, traffic signals and street lighting, and improvements to the storm sewer, sanity sewer, and water main.

Meeting Details

When: August 18, 6-8 pm

Where: Meadowood Neighborhood Center (5734 Raymond Road)

Attendees will have an opportunity to review project displays and provide comments during the meeting. The meeting will be an open-house format from 6-8 pm, with a formal presentation beginning at 6:30 pm.

Fun Wisconsin Fact

Did you know that the “Wisconsin” statue on the dome of the Capitol building was sculpted in 1914 by Daniel Chester French? French was also the artist who sculpted the statue of Abraham Lincoln in the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.

The “Wisconsin” figure is modeled after the Greek god, Athena. Her left hand holds a globe with an eagle on it and her right arm is outstretched to symbolize the state motto, “Forward.” She wears a helmet with the state animal, the badger, on top. The statue is facing southeast, looking toward our nation’s Capitol building in Washington D.C.
