Dear Friends and Neighbors,

This weekend, I am attending the Great Lakes Legislative Caucus in Chicago to learn from policy experts and scientists about policy strategies to protect and restore the lakes across the entire basin.

Thank you for taking the time to check out the latest edition of my newsletter. This week you will get to read about a Republican proposal to give a half million dollars to so called “Pregnancy Resource Centers,” America’s 18 years of resilience since the September 11th attacks, a DNR warning on hunting and fishing license scams, and, as always, a Wisconsin Fun Fact.

It’s an honor to represent you in the State Assembly. If you have any questions or need assistance with any matter, please feel free to contact my office.

Sincerely,

Lisa Subeck

The Trouble with "Pregnancy Resource Centers"

This week, two Republican lawmakers proposed a bill that would give half a million dollars to anti-abortion activist group Choose Life Wisconsin that has a history of frightening and deceiving women who are simply seeking reproductive health care.  Women are tricked into entering facilities thinking they are accessing a legitimate health clinic offering services based on factually accurate medical information. Many times women are pressured into carrying a pregnancy to term despite not being ready to handle a child.

Republicans have spent the last 8 years making it harder for women to access reproductive health care, and now they want to funnel taxpayer money to unaccountable and deceptive facilities.  Choose Life Wisconsin and its affiliated “pregnancy resource centers” serve as the provider arm of the anti-abortion movement.

9/11 - Eighteen Years Later

It’s hard to believe that eighteen years have passed since the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center. All these years later, families who lost loved ones are still rebuilding, and many first responders are still suffering the effects of their exposure to Ground Zero that day.

Annually on September 11, we pay tribute to those whose lives were lost in the attacks, and honor the survivors and family members of those who perished. We have rebuilt the site now known as One World Trade Center, there is now a September 11th Memorial and Museum, 400 trees grow in the plaza of the 9/11 Memorial, books have been written and movies have been made to tell the stories of that day.  This week more than any other we should take the time to reflect on the resilience of this nation following these attacks.

This week, Governor Evers declared Wednesday September 11, 2019 a day of service and ordered the flag of the State of Wisconsin to be flown at half-staff to recognize this fateful day in American history.

DNR Issues Warning about License Scams

With hunting season starting soon, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is cautioning the public about hunting and fishing license scams.  Currently, the DNR knows of two websites offering these licenses.  After paying a fee through the site, consumers only get information on how to apply for a hunting or fishing license, not the license itself.  Additionally, these sites are collecting sensitive personal information during the transactions.

If you are looking to purchase a hunting or fishing license, make sure to purchase it directly from the DNR or its authorized agents.  The department’s only official online license sales site is called GoWild and can be found at gowild.wi.gov.

Cold and Flu Season Is Near

With kids back to school and the leaves about to change color that can only mean flu season is on its way.  The CDC recommends that everyone six months and older get a flu shot early to prevent the spread of the virus.  Flu vaccines cause the body to develop antibodies that protect against infection about two weeks after vaccination.  Annual flu activity often begins in October, so Public Health Madison and Dane County is recommending that people get flu shots before the flu season begins.

In addition to the flu, drier air and close proximity to others makes it easier for cold viruses to survive and spread.  To help prevent the spread of common colds, make sure to get plenty of sleep, stay hydrated, keep your hands off of your face, and wash your hands frequently.  There is no cure for the common cold, so the best line of defense is to minimize the spread of germs.

Wisconsin Fun Fact: America’s First Kindergarten

At 919 Charles Street in Watertown, Wisconsin sits an unassuming small building that used to stand on North Second St.  Upon the threat of demolition, a move was needed to save this structure because of its historical significance – America’s first kindergarten.

Margarethe (Meyer) Schurz settled with her husband, Carl, in Watertown in 1856 after emigrating from Germany by way of England (where she helped her sister establish the first kindergarten in London). She began the Watertown kindergarten in her home with her first students consisting of her three year old daughter Agathe and her four cousins; Margarethe taught the lessons to the children in German.

It was Margarethe’s life in Germany that proved to be the inspiration for kindergarten as she had the fortune of studying under Friedrich Froebel who is best known for laying the framework for modern education systems.  Froebel viewed children as each having different needs that required nurturing, just like individual plants in a garden have different needs.  This is how we get the term “kindergarten” or “children’s garden.”

Word spread about the kindergarten, and soon more parents wanted this type of early education for their children.  It wasn’t long before the noise from the children proved to be too much for her husband, so the school was moved to this small building that had been used by Carl’s parents as a dwelling, and subsequently, after its move from North Second Street, now sits adjacent to Watertown’s Octagon House. Both are maintained by the Watertown Historical Society.
