Wednesday, the Joint Committee on Employment Relations approved a 2% pay raise for state and University of Wisconsin employees to go into effect in 2020 and then again in 2021. Unfortunately, the $15 minimum wage proposed by Governor Evers was rejected by Republicans on the committee despite the fact that the State of Wisconsin has a difficult time recruiting employees in certain fields or losing them to the private sector.
Also, this week, the lawsuit over the purging of voter registration heated up with the case being taken to the Court of Appeals. The case is effectively on hold because the court wants to hear from the plaintiffs before making a decision. The best thing voters can do right now is check their voter registration on MyVote.wi.gov to make sure your registration is current especially since 2020 is a presidential election year.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is excited to announce more than 40 candlelight events happening this winter at Wisconsin state parks, forests, recreation areas, and trails.
Most events begin around sunset and run until 8:30 p.m. or 9 p.m. Properties offer an array of activities from skiing, snowshoeing to hiking, and include bonfires and hot chocolate. Depending on the property, other refreshments may be available for sale. Some candlelight events even provide grills for cooking food or roasting marshmallows while some properties have warming shelters.
This winter's candlelight events kick off Jan. 4 at Blue Mound (Iowa County) and Mirror Lake (Sauk County) state parks. The largest number of events take place on Jan. 19, Feb. 2, and Feb. 9. Feel free to call properties directly to confirm the event if there is inclement weather in the forecast.
Beginning October 1, 2020, as required by federal regulations, every air traveler 18 years of age and older will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license (or another acceptable form of identification) in order to fly.
As the holiday travel season is now underway, this is a good time to think about your preparations ahead of next year’s deadline. For information on upgrading your Wisconsin drivers license free of charge, please see the Wisconsin DMV’s website or check out the TSA’s website page.
It is forecasted that 115.6 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more between Saturday, December 21 and Wednesday, January 1. This would be the largest travel volume since 2000, meaning drivers could experience double the travel times on Thursday and Friday afternoon.
More than 853,000 motorists will call AAA for assistance at the roadside this holiday season. Dead batteries, flat tires and lockouts will be the leading reasons AAA members will experience car trouble. Be sure to take your vehicles to a trusted repair facility to perform any needed maintenance before heading out on a road trip, and remember to slow down and move over for stopped emergency vehicles at the roadside. It’s the law in all 50 states.
