Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Happy New Year. I hope you enjoyed the holiday season with family and friends. Here at the Capitol, things are starting to pick up as the spring legislative session begins. The Assembly will be on the floor on January 12th and January 19th, though we do not yet know exactly what will be on the agenda.

In this week’s newsletter, you will find an update on Wisconsin’s layoff numbers, information regarding the Capitol celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and information on how to track legislation of interest to you.

If you have any questions or need assistance with any matter, please feel free to contact my office.

Sincerely,

Lisa Subeck

State Representative

78th Assembly District

Layoffs in Wisconsin Surpass 10,000 in 2015

This week we learned that Wisconsin surpassed 10,000 layoffs last year as a result of failed Republican economic policies. These numbers confirm that 2015 was Wisconsin’s worst year for job losses since Gov. Walker took office. As we see strong economic growth in neighboring Midwestern states, it is disappointing to see Wisconsin continuing to lag behind.

In addition to offering several bills that would create jobs and rebuild the middle class, Democrats are continuing our call for a special session on jobs. We want to move these bills forward to finally provide opportunities for hardworking Wisconsinites who are struggling in our lagging economy.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day

As January 18th approaches, I hope you will take time to celebrate and reflect on the life and legacy of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.. Wisconsin’s 36th annual tribute and ceremony to this great pioneer and leader will take place in the Capitol rotunda at noon on Monday, January 18th. The event is free and open to all and will include guest speaker Ms. Aja Brown, Mayor of Compton, California, as well as word and music that illuminate the life and legacy of Dr. King. The event will be aired on Wisconsin Public Television and Wisconsin Public Radio. Though details are still being finalized, you can find more information on Wisconsin Public Radio’s website: http://www.wpr.org/, by calling: 1-800-747-7444, or by emailing listener@wpr.org.

You Ask, I Answer

From time to time a constituent emails or calls with a question. Often, I am asked the same question by many constituents or believe the answer may be of interest to others, as well. Therefore, I have added a new feature to the newsletter called, “You Ask, I Answer.” Please feel free to email your questions to Rep.Subeck@legis.wisconsin.gov, and we may share the answer in a future e-newsletter.

Question: How can I keep up to date on legislation pending before the Legislature?

Answer: The legislature has an online tool called the Legislative Notification Service. It is a website that allows you to follow legislative activity. After creating an account, you can search for specific legislation or committees and add them to your subscription list. Then you will get an email when there is activity for items to which you are subscribed. You can even follow issues by subscribing to keywords like "Mining", "Health" or "Budget".

You can get started by setting up a free account today by clicking here. If you ever have follow up questions about legislation or action by a committee you can always call or email my office.

Blue Books and Maps

My office still has several of the newest edition Blue Books and state maps. If you would like one, you may pick one up my at my Capitol office (418 North) any time from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. If you are unable to come to the Capitol but would like a Blue Book or map, please email Rep.Subeck@legis.wisconsin.gov or call my office at 608-266-7521 to have one sent to you.

Spring Interns

My office is now accepting applications for spring interns. If you or someone you know is looking for a spring internship, we still have openings. You can apply online by clicking here, or submit a cover letter and resume via e-mail to rep.subeck@legis.wi.gov. It is a great way to gain some experience and learn about the legislative process.

Fun Wisconsin Fact

The City of Madison is named after James Madison because he had died on June 28, 1836, close to the time when Madison was chosen to be the state capital. James Duane Doty, a land speculator and the congressional delegate of the Wisconsin Territory, named the city of Madison after President James Madison and named the original streets after the 39 other signers of the U.S. constitution.
