Dear Friends and Neighbors,

It was a disappointing night for Badger fans last night, but I am so proud of our team for making it as far as they did. Congratulations to Bo Ryan and the team for an incredible season.

In this week’s newsletter, you will find an update on legislation that impedes the ability of local municipalities like Madison to regulate so-called transportation network companies, Election Day information, and an invitation to join me tomorrow night at a listening session on the state budget.

If you have any questions or need assistance with any matter, please feel free to contact my office.

Sincerely,

Lisa Subeck

Transportation Network Companies (TNC) Legislation on the Fast Track

Last week I shared with you information about introduced proposed bill that would take authority away from local governments to regulate TNCs. This legislation is championed by a company called Uber, which provides taxi service under the guise of ride sharing using a network of individual drivers who are dispatched utilizing a smart phone application. Uber is the Walmart of the taxicab industry and is spending big money on lobbyists in an attempt to undercut locally owned and operated taxi companies by writing their own rules.

Unfortunately this bill is on the fast track. On Thursday, it received public hearings in both the State Senate and State Assembly. I testified at both hearings, to express my opposition to the bill and raise concerns about how it impacts Madison.

Summer Interns

My office is now accepting applications for summer interns. If you or some you know is looking for a summer internship, we still have openings. You can apply on the website by clicking here or submit a cover letter and resume via e-mail to rep.subeck@legis.wi.gov. It is a great way to gain some experience and learn about the legislative process.

Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week

The week of April 13-17, is Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week in Wisconsin. Wisconsin averages 23 tornadoes annually. Last year, 38 tornadoes in Wisconsin were confirmed by the National Weather Service (NWS). Eight of the tornadoes were rated as strong and the remaining 30 were rated as weak.

At 1:00 p.m. Thursday April 16, the National Weather Service will issue a statewide mock tornado watch and at 1:45 p.m. a statewide mock tornado warning. Many radio and TV stations will participate in the drill. In addition, NOAA weather radios (also known as emergency weather radios) will issue alert messaging. This is an ideal opportunity for schools, businesses and families to practice safe procedures for severe weather.

If actual severe weather occurs anywhere in the state on April 16th, the tornado drill will be postponed to Friday, April 17 with the tornado watch and warnings issued at the same scheduled times. If severe weather occurs on Friday, the drill will be cancelled. The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, Wisconsin Emergency Management and the National Weather Service encourage your participation in promoting Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week. For more information on tornadoes and severe weather, contact your county emergency management director or your local NWS office.

Madison Yard Waste Sites Open

Madison property owners can now dispose of your yard waste at 3 sites in the City of Madison. The three sites are: 4601 Sycamore Ave., 1501 W. Badger Road and 402 South Point Road. The Sycamore and Badger sites will also take brush, large items, garbage and recycled electronics.

Waste Sites are open every day from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and to 8 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday. City of Madison’s Streets Division have started collecting brush and yard waste from the curb.
