Budget Update

Last week Governor Walker released his proposed budget. I am still awaiting the full analysis from the Legislative Fiscal Bureau. As I shared last week, the state budget should focus on creating economic opportunity for all Wisconsinites.

As it stands, the governor’s proposed budget raises a number of concerns. He has proposed cutting $300 million from the University of Wisconsin system; cutting K-12 public education funding for our neighborhood schools by lifting to cap on his school voucher program to divert funds to unaccountable private schools; requiring $1.3 billion dollars of borrowing for transportation projects while making deep cuts to alternative transportation funding such as bicycling and the “complete streets” program. The proposed budget effectively eliminates the Stewardship fund which enables the purchase of important conservation and recreational lands. The governor also proposes large cuts to public broadcasting and changes to the popular SeniorCare program that will force more senior citizens into Medicare Part D, adding to their health care and prescription drug costs. While this is not an exhaustive list of everything in the budget, these are some items that raise serious concerns.

Most importantly, the budget proposed by Governor Walker fails to put Wisconsin families first. I am committed to working for changes that will focus on creating economic opportunity through strengthening public education, our technical colleges, and the UW System; investing in the creation of jobs that pay family-supporting wages; and ensuring we take care of our state’s senior citizens and most vulnerable residents. The budget will likely change significantly as it makes its way through the process, so watch for more updates from my office as they become available.

Save SeniorCare

In the governor’s proposed budget, there is a provision that would end SeniorCare as we know it. I am teaming up with my democratic colleagues to stop this unconscionable action that would effectively eliminate a program that provides seniors low-cost, life-saving prescription drugs. Click here to access a printable petition to join me in the fight to save SeniorCare. I invite you to print it, sign it, help collect some signatures, and send it back to my office. All the instructions are on the petition. Please return the signed petitions to my office in the Capitol by March 1st. Petitions may be dropped off or mailed. If you have any questions, please contact my office.

Go Red for Women

Last Wednesday, I participated in the American Heart Association’s “Go Red For Women” event to raise awareness about heart disease and strokes amongst women. Each year, 1 in 3 women die from heart disease and stroke. Research has shown that 80 percent of cardiac events can be prevented with education and lifestyle changes. I encourage you to visit GoRedForWomen.org to learn what you can do to reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke or to join the campaign to raise awareness.

Honoring Dode Lowe

Last Thursday, I joined my fellow Dane County legislators in Honoring Dode Lowe.  Dode was an AFSCME union leader, and served five terms on the Dane County Board. He was involved in several charitable activities in the greater Madison area and was very active in politics at all levels. He fought tirelessly for progressive causes and social justice. We presented Dode’s wife, Gretchen Lowe, with a citation from the Wisconsin State Legislature honoring his service to our community. Dode Lowe made our community a better place, and he will be missed.
