Free Fishing Weekend

It's that time of the year again! Wisconsin's statewide free fishing weekend is upon us. You are welcome to fish most waters Saturday and Sunday, January 20-21, 2018, but you need to follow fishing regulations, size limits and bag limits. What you don't need is a salmon stamp, trout stamp, or fishing license. Find a place to fish! It's another great outdoor activity sponsored by our DNR.

What's New

It's a very good start to the New Year here in Madison. I’m pleased to announce that I have been added to the International Affairs and Commerce Committee. This committee has been tasked with looking at ways we can expand markets to our WI made and grown products. Having a district that is a very heavy in manufacturing and agriculture I am very excited to get to work on generating ideas to expand upon how much other states and countries know about our great Wisconsin products.

We’ve been quite busy with committee meetings on bills, including several of my own. My Second Start bill, AB124 has passed out of the Workforce Development committee this week. This bill works to connect students who didn’t find the UW system a good match with local employment and training information. Often times these students can feel a bit lost. I think it’s important for us to step in using our existing resources to help them find connection with employers and training programs desperate for an infusion of young talented individuals.

Today in the State Assembly we passed my bill, AB539, dealing with placement of sexually violent persons. This is a hot button issue for several communities in our area that have been forced to place individuals from other counties in our own back yards. The bill that I co-authored with Senator Testin will ensure that judges from other areas of the state can no longer place individuals classified as sexually violent in other counties.

Finally we have seen our Harvest for Hope bill, AB577, make it through committee as well. This bill has been one of our highlighted initiatives for this session and I am thrilled we are getting close to the finish line with it. It is a common sense bill that will make sure that more excess crops end up in food banks and pantries around the state. Hunger is a major issue in child development and success, no child in Wisconsin deserves to go hungry.

One last issue I wanted to mention this week is the Supreme Court hearing on the proposed dairy in Saratoga. Both sides presented their case to the seven justices late last week, we have not been given a timeline as to an expected decision date. When we have more information we will certainly share what we know.

Thanks for reading, I’m looking forward to 2018 and wish you all a Happy New Year.
