MADISON – Today, Rep. Katrina Shankland (D-Stevens Point) joined Governor Evers, Reps. Robyn Vining (D- Wauwatosa), Beth Meyers (D- Bayfield) and Nick Milroy (D-South Range) and Sen. Brad Pfaff (D-Onalaska) in introducing legislation to eliminate the personal property tax and hold municipalities harmless.
Rep. Katrina Shankland (D-Stevens Point) released the following statement:
“The personal property tax adversely impacts Main Street businesses at a time when far too many have either closed or are struggling with an abundance of challenges related to the Covid-19 pandemic. While many industries and professions, from manufacturing to agriculture, are currently exempt from the personal property tax, restaurants, taverns, and other small Main Street businesses still have to pay it under current law. This is both inefficient and inequitable, and it places an unfair burden on community-focused businesses.”
“I am pleased to introduce this timely proposal with Governor Evers and my legislative colleagues. Eliminating the personal property tax while holding municipalities harmless is a step we can take right now that will meaningfully support our small businesses and alleviate some of the financial stress they continue to face. I call on my fellow legislators in both parties and houses to support this proposal and pass it into law as soon as possible.”
