Friends and Neighbors,

I hope you are doing well. Madison has been pretty quiet the past few weeks as the Legislature isn’t scheduled to meet again until late September; however, I’ve been spending my time working with the Democratic Labor Caucus and attending events in our community.

This month I coauthored a bill to fully legalize marijuana in Wisconsin. It’s time our state takes advantage of this economic opportunity and fixes our backward marijuana policies. African-Americans use marijuana at the same rates as white individuals, but are almost four times more likely to get arrested for possession nationally, and six times more likely in Wisconsin. Although Republicans continue to reject proposals to legalize marijuana, I will continue to fight for legalization.

I always welcome your feedback and opinions, so please feel free to contact me. Also, if you would like something to be included in future e-newsletters, just let me know at (608) 266-0455 or Rep.Ohnstad@legis.wi.gov.

Sincerely,

Recent Phone Scam

I’ve recently been made aware of a phone scam regarding Federal Student Loan Forgiveness. Someone will call you and let you know you’re available for student loan forgiveness and give a number for you to call back. Please do not call back and give any personal information, even if it seems genuine. Lastly, any phone call or voicemail you receive mentioning Federal Student Loan Forgiveness is most likely a scam. If you are not sure, please call my office at 608-237-9529 and we can assist you.

Kenosha Community Health Clinic Meeting

It was great to meet with KCHC this month to discuss their goals moving forward. I’m thankful for their work to ensure Kenosha County has access to quality healthcare.

Franks Diner

One of Kenosha’s most iconic restaurants appeared for the second time on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives! Frank’s commitment to our community and his employees is remarkable. Congratulations!

Pride Fest

It was great to attend pride fest and see so many familiar faces. I’m pleased to stand with the LGBTQ+ community in Kenosha, and will continue to fight for equality in Madison.

One Year later

This week marked the one-year anniversary of the police-involved shooting of Jacob Blake, highlighting the need for action and attention on issues surrounding use of force, law enforcement training, and racial injustice. Our hometown was deeply impacted by this tragedy and the several other tragedies which occurred after. I was proud to support and cosponsor bipartisan legislation which was signed into law relating to law enforcement policies and training. As these provided a step in the right direction, it’s clear we need further reform. Click here for my full statement.

Unemployment Assistance

While wait times and payment processing have significantly improved, I’m aware there are still many issues. It is important Wisconsinites are able to use this critical program when they need it most.

If you or someone you know is struggling to get their unemployment payments, my staff is able to help. Please call my office at 608-266-0455 or email Rep.Ohnstad@legis.wisconsin.gov. My office will be sure to send your claim directly to the Department of Workforce Development.
