State Capitol Report

Friends and Neighbors,

It is always a pleasure to share my monthly State Capitol Report with you. I think communicating with you about the events happening in the State Capitol and in Kenosha as the most important part of my job. I have enjoyed corresponding with you throughout the 2017-2018 legislative session.

This month's newsletter will be the last distributed until after Election Day in November 2018, per Wisconsin State Statute. However, I will still be preparing them and posting them on my legislative website and Facebook page. I will also continue to write my monthly column in the Labor Times.

As always, if you would like something to be included in future e-newsletters, or have a problem with a state relate related problem, just let me know at (608) 266-0455 or Rep.Ohnstad@legis.wi.gov.

Extraordinary Session
While I thought we were officially adjourned until January of next year, the full Assembly reconvened for an extraordinary session on school safety on March 22. While I voted to support the bills before me, I'm disappointed in the inaction by legislative Republicans to address common-sense gun legislation and strengthen background checks, especially when more than 80% of Wisconsinites support background checks.
If one extraordinary session wasn't enough, legislative Republicans and Gov. Walker attempted to evade a ruling by a judge, appointed by the Governor himself, to undermine democracy by changing our election laws and to prevent over 200,000 Wisconsin residents in two districts the right to vote and representation. After two other judges ruled the same way, the Governor backed down and the scheduled and elections.
