Assembly Republican colleagues and I put forward new policy initiatives to help address the coronavirus surge in Wisconsin. The package of ideas include building a robust testing system, doubling the number of contact tracers, assisting the healthcare industry, ensuring an efficient distribution of COVID-19 vaccines, requiring Unemployment Insurance reform and helping small businesses. The goal is to find a consensus so the legislature can act on a bipartisan package in order to better utilize the CARES Act funding that runs out at the end of the year.
I think it's essential that the state dramatically increases testing for COVID-19. We need more community and rapid testing. We also should have at-home tests for Wisconsinites across the state. It's common sense when you think about it; people stay home when they know they're sick. However, with the coronavirus, individuals may have the virus and spread it without even knowing they have it. Studies show roughly 30% of patients who tested positive for coronavirus were asymptomatic. We need to find the virus faster.
I look forward to discussing these legislative initiatives with our Senate colleagues and the governor. It's time for some bipartisan answers because what we are doing now is not working. As we move through the legislative process, I continue to echo the call from health officials that citizens need to follow CDC guidelines: wear a mask, socially distance, wash your hands and stay home when possible.
Need your Input
You may recall that I asked the Assembly Committee on Campaigns and Elections to investigate November's statewide election. We all agree that we must protect the integrity of our elections and ensure every legal vote counts.
Currently, Assembly Republican staff are going through thousands of e-mails about the election from concerned citizens. If you'd like to help the Assembly Committee on Campaigns and Elections, send specific and actionable information to the following e-mail address: election.complaints@legis.wi.gov. We ask that a complaint, concern or allegation would include the following:
Specific and first-hand information regarding potential fraud/misconduct. Hearsay or news reports of non-specific events will not be useful.
Detail on the incident/practice being reported (What, where, when and who).
Any supporting materials that would be helpful in vetting the allegation. This could include photos or names of witnesses.
Contact information so the person can be reached for clarification or additional information. If people choose to remain anonymous, that is their right but it may limit the value of their information if it is incomplete.
Weekly Radio Address
This week Assembly Republicans unveiled ideas to help the state fight the coronavirus.
The package includes building a robust testing system, doubling the number of contact tracers, assisting the healthcare industry, ensuring an efficient distribution of COVID vaccines, requiring Unemployment Insurance reform and helping small businesses.
With COVID cases surging across the state, Wisconsin needs some bipartisan answers.
The virus is the enemy; not the other political party.
I look forward to working with my Senate colleagues and the governor.
We need to put disagreements aside and move forward on policies that keep communities safe while not bankrupting families or our economy.
