Welcome to my e-update

Thank you for taking the time to read this week's e-update. I always strive to include information you find interesting and informative as it relates to my work in Madison and the 60th Assembly District.

My most important goal remains serving you, my constituents. Helping you find solutions to difficult problems when it seems like the state is unresponsive is the single greatest reward for my staff and me. I take constituents' input seriously and continually work hard on your behalf.

I always have your thoughts and concerns in mind when deciding whether or not to support legislation. Furthermore, I appreciate when you take time out of your schedules to contact me.

Have a great week,

Question of the Week

This week, at a press conference, Governor Tony Evers unveiled his proposal to provide in-state tuition rates at UW-System institutions, to illegal immigrants. Twenty-one other states and the District of Columbia allow illegal immigrants to pay in-state tuition rates.

Governor Jim Doyle, in his 2009 budget, also known as Assembly Bill 75, granted in-state tuition to illegal immigrants who graduated from Wisconsin high schools. Wisconsin Assembly Bill 40 (2011) revoked in-state tuition for illegal immigrants.

I am interested in your thoughts on Governor Evers' decision to grant in-state tuition to illegal immigrants. Under Governor Evers' proposal, illegal immigrants who have attended high school or been "present" in the state for three years, are eligible for in-state tuition.

In contrast, Wisconsin veterans must prove not only that they have resided in the state for five years, but that they served in the military and maintained their grades, to receive in-state tuition rates.

Please, take just a minute to answer my one-question survey on in-state tuition for illegal immigrants.

Results of last week's survey

Thank you to everyone who answered last week's survey questions; we had a record number of responses, 181. In order to increase the number of responses and obtain a more diverse sample of constituent opinions on seminal issues, I encourage you to share our survey with your family and friends and/or sign up for our e-update.

Sixty-five percent of respondents to question one opposed increasing the minimum wage to $15 per hour. Conversely, just thirty-one percent of respondents supported increasing the minimum wage to $15 per hour.

As for question number two, seventy-two percent of respondents supported exempting tipped-service employees from the minimum wage requirement. Just twenty-eight percent of respondents opposed the tipped-service employee exemption.

2019 Hunting and Fishing Licenses

As spring approaches, many Wisconsinites are excited to get outdoors and pursue their warm-weather outdoor recreation passions. Hunting and fishing licenses and the 2019 collectible conservation card are now available for purchase on the DNR's website.

Also, before hitting the trails and waters, the Department of Natural Resources encourages Wisconsinites to check the registration on their boats, ATVs, UTVs, and off-highway motorcycles as many will expire after March 31. A $5 late fee will be applied to ATV, UTV and OHM renewals that are received by the DNR after the March 31 expiration date.

District Day

Last Monday, my staff and I spent the day meeting with individuals and organizations that have positively impacted our local communities. In particular, we had the opportunity to meet with Sheriff Jim Johnson to discuss initiatives his office has taken to keep our communities safe; Nina Walker and Holly Ryan of the Ozaukee Jail Literacy Program about the success of their program; and Linda Pierschalla from the Cedarburg Public Library. In addition, we took a tour of Cedarburg's state-of-the-art public library.

If you have ideas for my next district day, please contact my office.
