Rep. Thiesfeldt Named Chairman of Legislative Council Study on Student Data
Madison – Today, Rep. Jeremy Thiesfeldt (R-Fond du Lac) was named chairman of the Legislative Council Study Committee on Student Data. Study committees are organized by the Wisconsin Legislative Council, with legislative approval, to better understand issues and make recommendations for the upcoming 2017-2018 legislative session.
Rep. Thiesfeldt stated, “I am honored to be named chairman of this study committee. In our digital age, we need to find more effective ways to safeguard student data. We have many passionate and qualified public members that were also appointed and will give the legislature great insight into how student data is utilized in Wisconsin. I look forward to our first meeting in July.”
The purpose of the study committee is to review all student data gathered by the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) and the data security measures that protect student privacy. The committee will study whether the data is required by federal law, state statute, or administrative rule and the purposes for which the data is utilized, and consider developing legislation to limit the types of student data collected by DPI and to improve the security of that data.
