Senate Education Committee Testimony

This week I testified in the Senate Committee on Education with Senator Joan Ballweg (R-Markesan) on Senate Bill 555 (SB 555). This bill would add the teaching of Wisconsin’s Safe Haven laws for health classes in schools.

I drafted this bill after hearing about the tragedy concerning a newborn baby, Harper who was found murdered this winter in Green County. The intention of this bill is to increase awareness of Safe Haven laws for young people who may be experiencing a crisis. Safe Haven laws allow a newborn to be dropped off at public locations such as a hospital, local police department or fire station within 72 hours of birth.

I especially want to thank Bobbie Thomas, Monroe, representing the Green County Abuse Prevention Team for testifying at the hearing as well. Bobbi's testimony brought to light the dire need for this bill and emphasized how simple additions in education curriculum can help prevent future tragedies.

DBA Meeting

I had a great meeting this week with Dairy Business Association leaders on agricultural issues, as well the ag agenda for the remainder of this legislative session.

Part of the delegation included Cody Carpenter of Darlington. The DBA always provides a great discussion on ag issues.
It continues to be a major priority for me to meet with and work with ag groups both in district and throughout the state. I am looking forward to continuing to work on legislation that supports the ag industry here in southwest Wisconsin.

 Meeting with Wisconsin Technical Schools

Last Friday, I had the privilege to meet with student government members and other stakeholders from Southwest Technical college and the Wisconsin Technical Colleges Association.
During the meeting we discussed legislative priorities for tech schools as well as options and strategies for how to interact with state government officials during the budgeting process.

I am a proud supporter of technical colleges because I believe they provide valuable workforce preparedness. As we continue to experience labor shortages in Wisconsin it is critically important that we continue to support tech and trade schools that help prepare students to enter the workforce.
