Environmental Budget Victory

On Thursday, the Joint Committee on Finance met to finalize portions of the budget. Among other topics, the committee voted on funding for the DNR and Environmental Quality provisions in the biannual budget.

My budget motion to increase funding for land and water county conservation staffing grants by $900,000 in 2017-2018 and another $900,000 in 2018-2019 was approved, and will be included in the final budget when it goes to the Governor's desk.

Land and water conservation staff collaborate and work with local land owners to conserve and maintain the state's limited land and soil productivity, lakes, streams, and groundwater while protecting our environmental infrastructure.

Wisconsin Ranks #1 in the Nation for Health Care Quality

On Monday, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) released rankings showing Wisconsin ranking #1 for overall health care quality in the nation. Followed by Massachusetts and Pennsylvania, Wisconsin has ranked outside of the top three only twice in the past ten years.

This ranking, based on performance across 130 different categories, comes after Wisconsin's Critical Access Hospitals were ranked as the best in the nation by the Federal Health Resources and Services Administration. Critical Access Hospitals are defined as hospitals with 25 or less impatient beds and are typically located in rural areas. This is great news for Wisconsin and our rural communities.
