 White Mound County Park

Sen. Marklein & I welcomed Sauk County board members Tom Bychinski, John Alt, Robert Spencer, and Sauk County Parks Director Matt Stieve for a hearing on AB 372 and SB 276. These bills will transfer ownership of the property at White Mound County Park from the DNR to Sauk County. This action, prompted by the county, aims to remove an extra level of oversight currently held by the state. As it stands, White Mound County Park is managed by Sauk County, but is required to seek approval from the state for any new structural developments. The bill passed the Senate last week and will be voted on by the full assembly on June 21.

Marsy's Law

On Thursday, Sen. Wanggaard, Attorney General Brad Schimel, and I testified on behalf of victims across the state. Assembly Joint Resolution 47, also known as Marsy's Law, is a bill I authored that enshrines the rights of victims in our state constitution through a constitutional amendment. The amendment would include the right of victims to be present and to be heard at all court proceedings. The victim would also have the right to be treated with dignity and respect and be notified of each stage of the proceedings. During the hearing in Madison, we heard from victims of violent crimes who emphasized the need for stronger rights for victims. Aligning the rights of victims with the rights of the accused is a positive change that will benefit countless crime victims in our state. I look forward to continued work on this bill as it moves through the legislative process.

Conservation Staffing Funding

The environment is a top priority for many of my constituents. As part of the budget process, I've put forth a request to allocate $1.8 million to land and water conservation staffing. This is a county-led program that works to implement sustainable conservation practices. In order to accomplish this goal, they are tasked with balancing the interests of landowners and the environment. The Land and Water Association is heavily involved in local water quality projects around the state as they look for ways to reduce nitrates and other contaminates in our drinking water. Water quality has been pushed to the forefront of legislative priorities in our area, and I believe these additional resources will be of great benefit to southwest Wisconsin.

In the District

The past two weekends, I had the privilege to volunteer at the Lafayette and Iowa County Dairy Breakfasts. It was exciting to see so many people come out to support Wisconsin's rich dairy and agriculture traditions. Last week, I had the chance to travel to Upland Cheese Company in Dodgeville. Pictured above is their award winning Pleasant Ridge Reserve Cheese. This special cheese is only produced between the months of May and October when their cows are eating fresh pasture. Thank you for the tour, Andy!

New Glarus Brewery

On Monday afternoon, Deb Carey, Founder and President of the New Glarus Brewing Company, invited me to New Glarus for a tour of their facility. She walked me through each step of their process that has led to their incredible success. Brewers of the popular Spotted Cow Ale and Moon Man Pale Ale, their products can be found at just about every bar around our state. Deb and I had an excellent conversation about the issues facing small breweries in Wisconsin. I even had the chance to taste a few of their seasonal beers. Thank you for the tour!
