Rep. Novak Applauds Passage of Increased Access to Medical Information for Adoptees

Bipartisan Legislation Helps Adoptees Make Prudent, Informed Decisions About Treatment Options. 

Madison…Earlier today, the Wisconsin state Assembly passed legislation authored by State Representative Todd Novak (Dodgeville) that will allow greater opportunities for information sharing between adoptees and birth parents.  Assembly Bill 513/Senate Bill 386 responds to the needs of adult adoptees while still protecting the rights of living biological parents who want to preserve their confidentiality.

“The changes we are making today by passing this bill will bring the program up to date and bring it in line with current medical and genetic advancements”, said Rep Novak.

The bill will allow an adoptee to find out crucial family background information, and become better informed of health risks.  An adoptee now will have a chance to find out if they have an increased likelihood of developing cancer, heart disease, or mental illness based on family history. The information sharing allows an adoptee to make prudent, informed decisions about potential treatment options.

“I personally became involved in the state adoption program because I believe that every child needs a loving home,” said Rep. Novak. “This bill permits adoptees access to their medical information so they can live a healthy, and prosperous life.”

The bill was passed by both the Senate and Assembly, and will now go to the Governor’s desk for his signature.
