Rep. Tranel Supportive of Positive Budget Changes

Madison – On Wednesday April 16th, the Joint Finance Committee (JFC) took action to remove fourteen non-fiscal policy items from the budget.  Items included the proposed changes to local assessments, the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection Board (DATCP) and Department of Natural Resources Board (DNR).

In addition to removing policy items from the budget, JFC voted to fund a Railroad Safety Inspector position within the Railroad Commission as well as to increase the funding for the Broadband Expansion Grant from $500,000 annually to $1.5 million for four years.

“Last year, WIConnect Wireless and Prosperity and SW WI Regional Economic Development Corporation received funds from the Broadband Expansion Grant program to help expand and upgrade service, increased grant funding will help promote more rural broadband access,” said Tranel.  “With the news of recent rail accidents, and the increased use of railroad for commerce, a Railroad Safety Inspector will help to ensure the safety and reliability of our railroad crossings,” said Tranel.

As the budget process moves forward over the next few weeks, Rep. Tranel will continue to work with his colleagues Sen. Marklein, Rep. Novak, and Rep. Brooks on additional positive improvements for Southwest Wisconsin.
