Happy New Year! The first week of January is off to an eventful start.
Two of my committees met for votes and public hearings, but with WisconsinEye not operating, you couldn't tune in live to see what work we did. My staff and I tried to cover them ourselves, but that is now being blocked by Republican Committee Chairs and the Speaker.
Just before the new year, I met with District Attorney Jason Sanders and helped the Beloit NAACP with an event to help feed students, and Sully is already enjoying his Sundays in 2026!
Government Transparency
On Wednesday, January 7, I livestreamed the Committee on Local Government with no issues. The next day in the Agriculture Committee, we were told livestreaming is no longer allowed, and we’re now hearing that this will become standard practice across committees.
If that’s the direction Republican leadership is heading, it represents a clear move to restrict public access. After WisconsinEye went dark, the response should have been to expand transparency, not quietly close another door on the public. I am disappointed to see the Assembly GOP go after the public’s 1st Amendment rights.
The buttons below link to our successful livestream of the Local Government Committee on January 7th, and the Agriculture Committee meeting just the next day, where we were told we could no longer record.
Beloit NAACP Food Drive
I had the opportunity to join the Beloit NAACP in assembling food bags for students in the Beloit School District. Thank you to everyone who showed up to support our kids. Let’s continue that support throughout 2026.
District Attorney Jason Sanders
Senator Mark Spreitzer, Representative Brienne Brown, and I sat down with Rock County District Attorney Jason Sanders to discuss the pressing issues facing DAs across Wisconsin. I appreciate Jason’s insight and expertise, and I’m grateful for the important work he does for Rock County.
Skater Sully
Edwards Ice Arena is home to Beloit Youth Hockey Association, BMHS Co-op, and regular open skates for the community. In the summer, the ice comes out and the arena transitions into a flexible event space, keeping Telfer Park active year-round.
