Funding our Police
In session this week, I voted to support law enforcement in communities throughout the State of Wisconsin by voting for a bill that decreases shared revenue payments to municipalities who cut funding for their police departments.
It is very important to me that we support our law enforcement, EMS, and Fire departments. By continuing "defund the police", we certainly are not making our local communities any safer. As funding for our law enforcement and safety personnel is decreased in municipalities across our country, we have seen the rise of violent crime. I am proud to vote for a bill that encourages safer communities and the rule of law.
The Question of K-12 Funding
This session, the Legislature has guaranteed that all districts will get a minimum of $781 per pupil if they taught in person instruction for at least 50% of the time during the 2020-21 school year. Most districts will get much more than this per pupil. Under the current budget proposal, the average will be $2,898 per pupil.
For comparison, the 2019-21 budget included $263 per pupil in year one and an additional $179 per pupil in year two. This is less than even the $781 minimum for this biennial budget proposal.
CWD Found in Green Lake County
It has been brought to my attention from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) that there has been a confirmed case of chronic wasting disease (CWD) in a wild deer in Green Lake County. The adult disease ridden dear was found dead in the Town of Brooklyn in May. This happens to be the first deer to have tested positive in Green Lake County.
Since Green Lake, Fond du Lac and Waushara counties are already identified as CWD affected counties, they have current baiting and feeding bans in place. This new CWD detection will now cause Green Lake County to have a three-year baiting and feeding ban and only a two-year ban in Fond du Lac and Waushara counties.
