National Salute to Veteran Patients Week

Each November we pause in honor of America’s brave men and women who’ve sworn an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States.  In May we reflect upon those who gave the ultimate sacrifice so that we may live in freedom. But did you know February is National Salute to Veteran Patients?

National Salute to Veteran Patients takes place February 10th to 16th, 2019.  Formally known as “National Salute to Hospitalized Veterans”, this national practice is observed annually during the week of Valentine’s Day.  The week is designated to say thank you to a special group of men and women, the more than 98,000 Veterans of the U.S. armed services who are cared for daily in Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers, outpatient clinics, and nursing homes.

The National Salute to Veteran Patients Program was created to: pay tribute and express appreciation to Veterans, increase community awareness of VA medical centers, encourage citizens to visit hospitalized and nursing home Veterans, and present volunteering opportunities.

Located in the 40th Assembly District, the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King is a long term and rehabilitative care facility consisting of four separately licensed nursing homes with approximately 700 skilled nursing care beds for veterans, veteran’s spouses, and Gold Star Parents. It is the place they come to spend the final years, months, and days of their lives.  Having lived in Waupaca my entire life - with the exception of the years I served in the U.S. Navy - I have seen firsthand the outstanding quality and professional care provided by the Veterans Home.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs website:  “Volunteers make a significant difference in the lives of veterans. The generosity of your volunteer time can be shared through a variety of assignments such as: supporting recreational activities, visiting with members, reading and/or writing letters for members, escorting members to church or appointments, and/or providing assistance on trips.”

Our heroes are what made America the greatest country in the world. During the Salute to Veteran Patients week, explore opportunities to brighten the life of a veteran – whether with a visit, a Valentine’s card, or community recognition. The time you invest will enhance someone’s life who gave their time to keep America a great nation. Additionally, while remembering our veterans, take some time to thank the dedicated staff who care for them!
