Forbes Ranks Wisconsin Best in Midwest for Future Economic Growth

State also moves up nine places in magazine’s annual ranking of “Best States for Business

Madison – Wisconsin outranks all other Midwest states when it comes to projected economic growth over the next five years, according to Forbes magazine’s new business climate rankings.

Wisconsin ranks 18th in the nation for projected growth in the magazine’s “Best States for Business” rankings released last week. Minnesota ranks 23rd, Indiana ranks 31st, Michigan is 34th, Ohio is 36th, Illinois is 40th, and Iowa is 42nd.

“Forbes’ positive rankings for Wisconsin confirm that not only is our economy getting stronger every day, but that the prospects for future economic growth here are significantly improving,” said Governor Scott Walker. “This is another indication the pro-business policies that we put into place are working, and the future is bright for all Wisconsin workers.”

The magazine’s growth prospects category measures job, income, and gross state product growth forecasts over the next five years from Moody’s Analytics. Other factors include business openings and closings and venture capital investments.

Wisconsin’s overall “Best States for Business” ranking moved from 41st last year to 32nd in 2014. The increase of nine spots in the ranking was the second-largest jump in this year’s survey.

Hunting Season in Underway

Now that another deer hunting season is underway, I hope that many Northwood's residents are enjoying time in the woods.  Hunting season is an exciting time for all sportsmen, but especially for first time hunters.  The Department of Natural Resources is providing "first-deer certificates" to hunters who harvest their first deer.  To receive the certificate from the Department, please complete the form by clicking here.

With the winter season approaching, extreme weather may cause the trail conditions to vary.  The Trail Conditions tab on the DNR website serves as a great resource to keep Wisconsin residents informed.  Be sure to check the trail conditions before exploring Wisconsin's beautiful State Park System!

The Department of Natural Resources website is also a great resource for all hunters and fisherman.  Please feel free to visit the department's website for hunting tips, season dates, license and permit sales, and other safety information before heading into the wilderness.

Rotary Meeting in Rhinelander

On Monday November 24, I hade the opportunity to speak to the Rhinelander Rotary Club at its luncheon meeting.  It was great to discuss the current business climate in Wisconsin and the upcoming legislative session.  It is always a pleasure to speak to the businessmen and women in my district.  Thank you Jack Sorensen for the invitation to speak to the local Rotary!

My legislative office in Madison will be closed on both Thursday November 27 and Friday November 28.  The office will return to normal office hours on Monday, December 1.

Again, Happy Thanksgiving and enjoy time with family, friends, and of course, the turkey.

Christmas Tree from Pelican Lake

The Christmas Tree for the state Capitol rotunda has finally arrived in Madison. For the last two years, the tree was harvested in the 12th Senate District.  Last year a balsam fir was selected and harvested in the Antigo region; this year, another balsam fir was chosen but from the Schoeneck tree farm in Pelican Lake.  I would like to thank Dennis and Kim Schoeneck for grooming the tree to preserve its shape as it grew over the years.  The Schoeneck's also donated trees to decorate the Executive Residence and the Capitol square.
