During last Thursday's Assembly floor session I was proud to present the “First Responder of the Year” award to Dave Rockteacher from the Eagle Fire Department. Dave has given his time and talents to the Eagle Fire Department for fifty years, and has served as a firefighter, Captain of EMS and Deputy Chief.  He was honored along with more than 100 first responders from around the state in a first-of-its-kind recognition ceremony.

Wisconsin has approximately 9,400 career firefighters and 9,900 career EMS personnel along with 23,000 volunteer firefighters and EMS providers. There are also more than 13,700 law enforcement officers throughout the state.  Award recipients represented the full spectrum of first responders: police officers, sheriff’s deputies, firefighters and all levels of EMS providers.

The Assembly also took legislative action that showed members’ support for Wisconsin first responders. Senate Bill 266, a bill that provides health insurance benefits to families of fallen officers, received final legislative approval and was signed by the Governor on Wednesday. The Assembly also passed a resolution to designate October 28th as First Responders Appreciation Day in Wisconsin.

Kid's Lemonade Stand Bill Heads to the Governor

I'm happy to announce my bi-partisan bill cutting government interference on children’s lemonade stands, Senate Bill 170, has passed the Assembly and is headed to the Governor’s desk. Although it seems like passing a simple bill cutting unnecessary red tape like this should be a no-brainer, it has been a long haul to get this bill to this point.
