Balanced Budget Amendment

This week, my colleagues and I circulated a joint resolution that would support the formation of a convention to propose an amendment to the US Constitution requiring the federal government to operate under a balanced budget.

President Obama’s administration added about $10 trillion dollars to the national debt. That is as much as every other president in American history combined. Currently, the national debt is nearly $20,000,000,000,000 ($20 trillion!). That’s $60,000 of debt for every man, woman, and child in the United States. Our nation is on an unsustainable track, and we must do all we can to right the ship. Forty-nine of the fifty states have a balanced budget requirement for their own state budgets, and it is about time we held the federal government to the same standard.

Of the 34 states required to call a convention, 28 have passed a resolution identical to the one I’ve sponsored. The states who have already passed the resolution include our Midwestern neighbors Iowa, Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan. In Wisconsin, we’ve also introduced another pair of resolutions to outline the procedures and rules of the convention in order to prevent a “runaway convention.”

The irresponsible level of debt is not only frustrating, it is dangerous to our nation’s future. Our government should be required to balance its budget just like any family or small business must. Both Republicans and Democrats are to blame and the problem needs to be fixed. The federal government needs to tighten its belt and implement sweeping reforms before it is too late.

President Trump's Address

Earlier this week, I had the privilege to attend President Trump's address as a guest of Speaker Paul Ryan. The President gave a great speech, and I am honored to have been able to attend. Here I am pictured with Speaker Ryan, along with Senator Stephen Nass, Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, and State Representatives Samantha Kerkman and Amy Loudenbeck, all of whom also attended the address.
