Thanks to the Sheboygan County Chamber of Commerce for hosting the annual Chamber Champions Gala last week! Things looked a little different this year, but it was great to celebrate all the good organizations we have in Sheboygan County.

Assembly Special Session

While nonpartisan audits of the unemployment insurance system showed that mismanagement was what drove the backlog and delays, not the computer system, the legislature remains committed to helping our constituents navigate through the Governor’s Department of Workforce Development.

That is why the Assembly took bipartisan action today directing Governor Evers to begin upgrading the state’s unemployment insurance computer system. The vote was 89-0. For the past few months the Governor has chosen to use the computer system as an excuse, while continuing to take no action despite insisting on urgency.

As the individual elected to be in charge of and lead the Department of Workforce Development, it is unfortunate the Governor has failed to take effective and timely action. The nonpartisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau has already shown that Governor Evers has both the authority and funding to begin updating the system but instead would rather play politics with people on unemployment.

The bill we passed today requires DWD to issue a request for proposals within 30 days, with the computer upgrade beginning by June 30, 2021, and requires federal funds be used before utilizing state funds. We also amended the bill to include additional relief for those who lost their jobs, and protections for businesses, schools and local governments from frivolous lawsuits.

This Week in Committee

On Wednesday, the Assembly Committee on Energy and Utilities and Senate Committee on Utilities, Technology and Telecommunication will hold a joint public hearing. As a member of the committee, I look forward to hearing from our invited speakers from the Public Service Commission, the Wisconsin Utilities Association, the Citizens Utility Board, and the National Federation of Independent Business.

We'll also be hearing testimony on AB 27, the omnibus bill from the Public Service Commission. This legislation is worked on jointly to streamline operations in the agency and improve interactions between regulators and the community.

As vaccine distribution continues, both Manitowoc and Sheboygan County updates are a helpful resource for those with questions about local information and availability.

Student Career and Technical Training Opportunities

Last week I had the chance to meet virtually with students to hear about their work as part of Career and Technical Student Organizations. These programs help students learn valuable skills they'll need once they graduate. It was also great to have Elaine from the district on the video-call as well. Thanks again for inviting me!
