Mental Health Takes Precedence

WPA Award Collage 500.jpg

Hello,

Last week I received the 2018 Friend of Wisconsin Psychiatric Association (WPA) Award. I know how important it is for individuals to receive high-quality and appropriate mental health services. As Chairman of the Mental Health Committee I draft, review and pass legislation addressing the needs of Wisconsinites dealing with mental illness.

The WPA was founded in 1957 and is a branch of the American Psychiatric Association. The organization's mission is to advance mental healthcare through leadership in education, service and advocacy. To learn more, click hereI am grateful for the work done by the WPA.

Sen. Darling again put an emphasis on mental health during an informational session she hosted. At the event, Dr. Jeffrey Taxman (below) spoke to legislators, staff, and other government officials to discuss his "Tri-Vector Model," a theory on the psychology of active shooters. His discussion was helpful to understand different influences that may generate gun violence, especially active shooter events. He also proposed some ways to identify at-risk youth and create a better environment to discourage future tragic events.

As always, if there is anything I can do to assist you, please contact me. You can share your thoughts, find out additional information on issues, or see where I stand on any legislation. I look forward to hearing from you and, as always, working for you.

Sincerely,

25th District School Visits

Students from Manitowoc Lincoln High School and Bethany Lutheran School stopped by the capitol for a tour this week. The students sat in the Assembly seats to feel like representatives! They heard all about the history of the Assembly and had the opportunity for a Q&A session. I enjoyed detailing some intricacies of the Assembly and answering their insightful questions.

As always, I encourage our young people to come to me with any questions or legislative ideas. This session, a grade school student from Jackson Elementary in Manitowoc contacted me about designating a state wildflower in Wisconsin. Because of her prompting, Sen. LeMahieu and I authored a bill recognizing the state wildflower as the Bee Balm and the state butterfly as the Monarch. I thank these students, parents and teachers for visiting their state capitol.

New Hope in Chilton

This month I visited New Hope Center, Inc. in Chilton. Each year, the local, non-profit organization helps around 150 individuals with intellectual disabilities, physical disabilities, and/or traumatic brain injuries. New Hope provides employment and transportation as well as residential and prevocational services. It also offers adult day services.

Interacting with service providers and participants was a great blessing. They clearly demonstrated the importance of New Hope in our community. On my tour, I saw some of the jobs carried out there! I know the organization will be a great resource in the future for many people searching for assistance and meaningful employment.

Special Session Announced

Next week, the Assembly will be in a special session to address school safety concerns in Wisconsin at the request of Governor Walker. Many of you voiced your concerns after the tragedy in Florida, and I look forward to hearing your thoughts on the proposed bills. This legislation package would:

  • Establish a $100 million School Safety Grant Program
  • Create an Office of School Safety within the WI Department of Justice
  • Require mandatory reporting of any threats of school violence
  • Amend the bullying law to include prompt parental notification
  • Include Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and Trauma-Informed Care in training programs
  • Bolster requirements for school safety programs
  • Promote cooperation between schools and law enforcement

Mental health remains at the forefront of many safety discussions. I am dedicated to supporting our schools, protecting our children, and addressing the needs of people suffering from mental illness in Wisconsin. Thank you for contacting me about this topic. Together, we can create a healthier and happier society.
