Committee Meetings and New Year's Cheer

Hello,
I hope you are enjoying the holiday season as we head toward 2018! Last Wednesday, the Committee on Natural Resources & Sporting Heritage met for an Executive Session. As a committee, we were able to vote out three beneficial bills. The first bill establishes a fall muzzleloader season for hunting deer on the Apostle Islands to better manage the deer population. It corrects an oversight that occurred after the passage of 2011 Wisconsin Act 50.
The second bill allows individuals to make voluntary contributions to the DNR to help pay for expenses for disabled veterans related to hunting and fishing. The final bill voted out of committee alters requirements for dog tags when a dog is being used in a bear of wolf hunt. The changes help align bear and wolf hunt standards with those used during the hunt of other animals, and remove unnecessary and burdensome regulation for hunters.
I voted in favor of all three bills and look forward to seeing the positive impact they will have on Wisconsinites who hunt and fish. The next step for these bills is a full Assembly vote. Session is starting up again during the third and fourth weeks of January. More information on upcoming session dates is coming soon!

Consumer Protection Meeting
I attended a Committee on Consumer Protection meeting last week Tuesday, where the committee voted on one bill and heard testimony on three others. I voted in favor of AB 544, and it successfully passed out of committee. The bill stops DATCP from regulating the purchase and rental of soda water equipment through administrative rule, in an attempt to foster more competition and negotiation between businesses.
In the wake of high-profile security breaches throughout the United States and after hearing public testimony, I was eager to sign on as a co-author of AB 565. The bill prevents credit reporting agencies from charging a fee for security freezes on consumer credit reports. We also heard about the benefits of a grant-matching program to promote fresh food donations to food banks in Wisconsin, as is detailed in AB 577.
Finally, we listened to insight on AB 684. This bill makes some adjustments to the copier lease acquisition process and provides three safeguards for consumers to combat potentially deceptive lease tactics used for copier and print equipment. Christmas Dinner Recap
The Christmas dinner at Faith Church in Manitowoc was a great success. It is estimated that over 200 people were served at the church and through deliveries to shut-ins. My wife and I had fun serving and talking with community members during the event. I hope you had a wonderful holiday, too!

Celebrating "Dressember"
This December, my staff and I participated in "Dressember." No, I did not have to wear a dress! Instead, men were encouraged to wear their favorite tie and women their favorite dress or skirt.
Representative Loudenbeck set up the picture so legislators and staff could take part in an international campaign against sex trafficking. Since 2013, "Dressember" advocates have raised over $3 million to increase global awareness and eradication of slavery and sex trafficking. I was proud to take part in this event.

Welcoming 2018
As 2017 comes to a close, I would like to extend many thanks for allowing me to serve you for another year. With our state economy soaring and unemployment near historic lows, it sure looks good for 2018.
I hope as you reflect back there are many fond memories and fun adventures you can recall from the past year. There are so many things I am thankful for when thinking about 2017 and even more I am looking forward to in the year ahead. For instance, I made it through two hip replacements and celebrated my 25th wedding anniversary with my wife in 2017.
If you would like to share any highlights from your year, I would love to hear them. In closing, New Year's Eve is an exciting time, so I encourage you to have fun and most importantly, be safe. See you in 2018!
