From Landfills to Fuel

Hello,

    On Wednesday, a bill I authored with Senator Cowles passed out of the Assembly Committee on Environment and Forestry as well as the Senate Committee on Natural Resources and Energy. The bill (AB 789) paves the way for pyrolysis and gasification to come to Wisconsin.

    So, what are pyrolysis and gasification you ask? They are new processes that convert post-use and currently non-recycled plastics in valuable commodities like oils, lubricants, and even fuel. That's right, FUEL! In fact, these processes could reduce our dependence on foreign oil and provide enough fuel for 150,000 cars per year.

    The bill is good for the not only the environment, but also for business. It does not change any environmental standards, reduces the amount of waste in landfills, and has the potential to create many jobs. A whole new industry may be coming to Wisconsin, and this bill is the first step toward making it happen. You can see our joint press release here and the testimony here.

Mental Health Committee Hearing

    I also chaired a Mental Health Committee meeting on Wednesday. We heard testimony on two different bills: AB 782 and AB 815. Public hearings are wonderful opportunities for legislators to get expert testimony from people who know the most about issues.

    For instance, we heard directly from foster parents (pictured above) when we discussed AB 782. This bill is part of the Foster Forward package. It would allow for the limited release of mental health information to out-of-home care providers and child welfare agencies. This could prevent burn-out for foster parents and help kids receive the best care possible.

    AB 815 would let law enforcement bring individuals who are going into emergency detention or who will be involuntarily committed to be transported to the most convenient mental health institute. It would also facilitate the creation of a grant program for regional mental health crisis centers.

    Representative Tittl and Senator LeMahieu will be hosting joint listening sessions in the 25th Assembly district on Monday, Jan. 29th. The listening sessions will take place in Hilbert and Valders. Details are below.

  • January is National Radon Action Month. Radon is a radioactive and odorless gas resulting from trace amounts of natural uranium in the ground. To test your home, you can pick up a kit for $6 from the Manitowoc County Health Department. Learn more here.
  • The Manitowoc Homeless Count is scheduled for 11 p.m. Jan. 24th through 6 a.m. Jan. 25th. Lakeshore CAP seeks volunteers.
  • There will be a public forum on hunger in Manitowoc County tonight, Jan. 18th, at 7 p.m. at Manitowoc City Hall.
  • English professor Albert Sears from Silver Lake College will present during a faculty colloquium on Jan. 25th. Event is free and open to the public.
  • On Feb. 8th, author Rochelle Pennington will discuss "The Christmas Tree Ship" at the Holiday Inn in Manitowoc.
  • Would you like to share insight on how to best support farmers during challenging times? WI DATCP is hosting a strategies meeting for Ag professionals on Jan. 24th in Kiel.
  • The Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 731, of Manitowoc County is offering three scholarships to qualifying high school seniors. Contact their office to learn more.
