I thoroughly enjoyed a tour of Mineral Springs Creek led by Ozaukee County Planning and Parks Director Andrew Struck on Love Our Great Lakes Day, October 9th. Removing old dams and restoring smaller waterways not only helps wildlife, but can also help prevent widespread flooding and erosion damage during our increasingly frequent severe weather events.
Energy and Utilities Committee Meeting
Earlier this afternoon, I attended the Energy and Utilities Committee Meeting. We heard testimony on Assembly Bills 588 and 504. As an electric vehicle owner, I was very interested to ask questions and learn more about AB-588. This bill would create an opportunity to install and expand charging stations across the state of Wisconsin, making electric vehicle charging more accessible. AB-504 would amend the review process to streamline water utility projects.
Birth Equity Act
On Tuesday October 12, I joined my colleagues and introduced the Wisconsin Birth Equity Act. This bill package consists of six legislative items that address critical disparities in maternal and child health, focusing on a variety of issues such as oral health, insurance coverage, and post-natal care. The Wisconsin Blue Book, published biennially, is a terrific source for information about the State of Wisconsin. According to the Legislative Reference Bureau, the Blue Book's mission is "to furnish the legislature and the public with information about state officers and governmental organization, along with statistical information and articles of general interest." DHS Update
The COVID-19 vaccine is the best way to protect yourself and others who cannot be vaccinated. Those who are vaccinated are less likely to contract the virus and be hospitalized with life-threatening symptoms. For more information about COVID-19 illness after vaccination, click on the chart below. Don't forget to schedule your booster shot if you are eligible! For more information click here.
Also, if you haven't gotten one already, get your flu shot today! Both the COVID-19 vaccine and flu shot will keep you safe and healthy and ease the burden on the dedicated employees of our health care system.
Drug Take Back Day
October 23 is Drug Take Back day! Local law enforcement agencies will be accepting your unwanted and remaining medications at drug disposal and Drug Take Back locations. To find one near you, follow this link. Participating in this program is a great way to keep your communities safe and old medications out of the wrong hands. If you cannot participate on Saturday, visit this website to find permanent drug drop boxes near you.
Do:
Wear a mask and physically distance at the drop-off site.
Bring prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, ointments, patches, inhalers, non-aerosol sprays, creams, vials and pet medications.
Dispose of vape pens or other e-cigarette devices, with the batteries removed.
Don't:
Bring illegal drugs, needles/sharps, acids, aerosol cans, or bio-hazardous materials.
Dispose of personal care products, household hazardous waste, or mercury thermometers.
Flush or put old medications in the sink; bring them to a Drug Take Back site instead!
