Newsletter Special Edition: Flood Updates and Resources

Over the weekend, our community experienced major rainfall that led to dangerous flash floods. Some areas saw over ten inches of rain, resulting in local highway closures and severe damage to homes, businesses, and roadways. 

I am working with local elected leaders to assist with emergency responses and will continue to communicate with residents, municipalities, the Governor’s office, and other stakeholders as we navigate this active emergency situation together.

Shelters: 
The American Red Cross is operating two shelters to assist those in need of additional resources such as food, care, and power. The shelters are located at Holler Park (5151 S. 6th St) and Washington Park Senior Center (4420 W. Vliet St.).  

Safety: 
Avoid walking in floodwater. Floodwater is unsanitary and contains unknown debris that could be harmful. If your basement is flooded, avoid entering the basement until it can be drained. Water and electricity do not mix. To report property damage, such as flooded basements, call 211. Do not drive through flooded streets or ignore street signs warning of flooding. It can take as little as 6 inches of water to sweep a car off the road. Also consider limiting water usage to prevent sewer overflows and further strains on the sewage system.
