Wisconsinís Biennium Budget Update

Last week the Governor introduced his budget to the citizens of Wisconsin. It is an extremely large document of roughly a thousand pages. The process of going through the budget line by line has begun.  For next few months the legislature will comb the budget and suggest changes to the Joint Finance Committee (JFC). I would like to share some initial thoughts on the Governor's proposal.

My first thought is to remember whose money we are spending. All in all I think the Governor has given us a great starting point, but we are still one of the highest taxed states in the country. As the economy starts growing it is easy to forget that a large majority of us ran on a smaller less intrusive government platform. It's time to cut taxes. The governor's budget gives some relief to both income and property taxes for every family. The second thought I had was to the old quote "a few million here and a few million there, pretty soon you're talking about real money".  We need to look at every dollar spent and not just the big ticket items.

Federal Compliance Legislation

In the last E-Update I reported that I had introduced a measure that would compel municipalities to follow federal law regarding immigration.  Although I had introduced the same bill last session, this time it is coinciding with President Trump's initiatives dealing with border security and sanctuary cities. It is my belief that safety is an issue that crosses party, racial, and cultural lines. In fact a poll reported in the Washington Examiner shows that a majority of Hispanics agree with Trump's immigration polices. Nobody wants dangerous criminals in their neighborhoods, including hard working immigrants. I believe everyone deserves to be safe. It is becoming clear that I am not the only one who thinks so.

God Bless Wisconsin!
