Partial Budget Veto Could Spell Trouble for Local Road Funding

In signing the budget last week, the governor partially vetoed funding for the Local Road Improvement Program (LRIP) that repairs deteriorating county highways and local roads. The budget passed by the Legislature increased funding for this program by $90 million and guaranteed local projects would be completed on time.

By vetoing the local road funding that our district could have benefited from, local road projects are at risk of not being completed. Instead the governor is leaving a $75 million slush fund for the Department of Transportation; an agency that at times has been inefficient with taxpayer dollars. I hope DOT will make the right decision and prioritize funding local road improvement when deciding how to distribute funding.

Both Oak Creek and South Milwaukee rely on local road funding provided by the state. For our community to continue to grow and prosper, properly funding infrastructure is a critical priority.

Going forward, we need to continue to work together to find ways to properly fund the local road projects that are vital to the success of our community.

50th Anniversary of the Moon Landing

Did you know that Apollo 11, the first manned spacecraft to land on the moon, carried a flag from all 50 states including the District of Columbia and the U.S. Territories?

Next week, Thursday, July 20, is the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. In remembrance of the historic trip, an exhibit will showcase the Wisconsin state flag that was carried to the moon and back by Apollo 11.

The exhibit will be available for viewing from 9 am – 4 pm at the Wisconsin Historical Society located just off the square in downtown Madison.

Road Construction in July

Recently, my office has received questions about local construction projects. As road construction continues through the summer months here are a few updates that may impact commutes for the community.

  • Ryan Road entrance ramp to I-94 EAST (SB) scheduled to open early July.
  • All south bound traffic between Ryan Road and County G is scheduled to shift west with three lanes of traffic open in east direction mid-July.
  • I-94 EAST (SB) ramps at Seven Mile Road schedule to open mid-July.
  • I-94 EAST (SB) exit ramp to Ryan Road scheduled to close short-term late July.

*All work is weather dependent and subject to change.
