On Monday, Wisconsin celebrated the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment that gave women the right to vote. Wisconsin was the first state in the nation to lead the way in ratifying the 19th Amendment edging out Illinois by a matter of minutes by most accounts. Roughly one year after Wisconsin approved the amendment it was finally passed by Congress.
The celebration at the Capitol featured descendants of the suffragists and speeches by women from both sides of the aisle including Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Ann Walsh Bradley, Rep. Sheila Stubbs, former Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch and Shannon Holsey, the President of the Stockbridge-Munsee Tribe. It was an honor to speak alongside these accomplished women. The original document Wisconsin approved supporting the amendment was also unveiled at the ceremony and will take its rightful place at the Wisconsin Historical Society.
I’m thankful to the women and men who fought for our right to vote which also opened the door for women to serve in our state legislature. I’m grateful for the opportunity and it is an honor to serve in our State Assembly!
