Assembly Passes Redistricting Bills

Every ten years, the Legislature is required under the Constitution to draw new legislative district maps. That process has been ongoing over the past few months since receiving the 2020 Census data. Earlier this week, the Senate passed the bills and yesterday, the Assembly passed the same bills. SB 621 is the new State Assembly and State Senate maps and SB 622 is the new Congressional maps.

During the debate on the legislative maps, the maps produced by the People’s Maps Commission were introduced as a substitute amendment. The People’s Maps Commission broke several laws during their deliberations, including violating open meetings requirements and diluting the votes of minorities. The so-called “People’s Maps” were rejected in a bipartisan supermajority vote, with 17 Democrats joining Republicans in voting them down.

Throughout this process, we have said that we are confident that we will pass maps that are fair, legal, compact, and contiguous and I remain optimistic that the Governor will sign the maps we passed this week.

Legislative Audit Bureau (LAB) Audit Report

Recently, the LAB released its audit of the 2020 Election. I wanted to be sure that you saw this report and had the chance to read it for yourself. Right now, the Legislature is taking time to review their report. Also, the Senate has begun officially looking into the LAB findings.

Going forward, we will review the findings so we can decide how to move forward. I look forward to working with my colleagues on legislation that ensures that our elections are conducted legally and fairly.
