The legislature will convene in an Extraordinary Session on Tuesday, April 14 to consider a bipartisan package of legislation that would help provide relief in Wisconsin during the COVID-19 outbreak. We will convene both in the Assembly Chambers and virtually, so that the needs of all 99 of our members are met.
As a result of the federal CARES Act, Wisconsin will be receiving $2.2 billion in federal aid. Among other proposals, the legislature will convene to approve the federal funding.
A majority of the funds will be dispersed at the governor's sole discretion, the remainder will go directly to local units of government with a population of 500,000 or greater. Earlier this week, Assembly Republicans sent a letter to Governor Evers outlining certain priorities for the federal funding based on feedback from our constituents. As outlined in the letter, these priorities address the needs of our hospitals and healthcare facilities, business owners, workers, and local governments.
The legislative package also includes a temporary elimination of the one-week waiting period for individuals to receive unemployment benefits.
Observing Easter or Passover during Safer at Home
Under the Safer at Home order, churches and religious entities are deemed essential. Yesterday, the Evers Administration clarified that religious entities wishing to conduct services under Safer at Home may safely do so using creative channels such as drive-in services, online streaming and small gatherings of groups of less than 10 individuals.
I want to wish all the members of our community celebrating, a Happy Passover and a Happy Easter!
