The Week in Review

Assembly Approves Two-Year Spending Plan

Crafting the 2017-2019 Wisconsin State Budget began back in early February when the governor unveiled his proposal before a joint session of the legislature. This week, that journey came to an end as my colleagues and I gave approval to the two-year spending plan.

Over the last several months, the Joint Finance Committee spent hours analyzing each portion of the budget and deliberating with members of both houses. With input from citizens and legislators, the final product is a state budget we can all be proud of.

The new spending plan is highlighted by a $639 million boost to K-12 education in addition to more funding for local roads and property taxes that are lower than in 2014. Additionally, the state portion of the property tax will be eliminated under this budget.

The budget also included a boost for the UW System and investing in workforce development to prepare students and residents across the state for jobs of the future.

The transportation portion of the budget includes new oversight and accountability measures for the Department of Transportation and the lowest level of bonding in more than a decade.

This week, Assembly Republicans proved once again that we can fund our priorities by being fiscally responsible and protecting taxpayers. I’m proud to support this budget.

Have a great weekend!
