The Week in Review

Fighting for Small Businesses

Small businesses are the backbone of our community. From the local cafes to the grocers and everything in between, small businesses create jobs and strengthen our local economy. With our strong brewing heritage in the Milwaukee area it should not come as a surprise that local craft brewers have now entered the arena and are growing in popularity.

Rumors have been swirling about a proposal that would place new regulations on the craft brewing industry limiting their ability to sell their products directly to consumers. It has been suggested such a proposal could be slipped in the budget under the so-called “999 motion.”

This week, a member of the Joint Finance Committee indicated that the unofficial proposal is dead and will not be included in the budget. Legislation that will directly impact our community requires thorough vetting and ought to be discussed in a public forum to debate its merits. A proposal of this nature does not belong in the budget. Furthermore, Assembly Republicans have taken steps to reduce government red tape and will continue to support efforts to reduce burdensome regulations while encouraging job growth and economic development.

We need to continue supporting small businesses in Wisconsin. Adding more regulations to growing industries would be a step in the wrong direction.

Have a great weekend!
