2021-23 State Budget Concluded

Pictured above: Rep. Goyke speaks about the budget in the June 29th Assembly Floor Session

The Joint Finance Committee concluded its work on the next biennial budget on June 17th. Following the committee’s actions, the nonpartisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau prepared a comparative summary of the Governor’s proposed budget and the budget that was voted out of committee and sent to the floor of both chambers to be voted on by the entire State Legislature. I opposed the passage of the Republican version of the budget in committee and in the June 29th session because of the missed opportunities and failures to meet important benchmarks set by Governor Evers.

You can watch my final remarks on the state budget below:

We are fortunate to have Governor Evers and his foresight of what is possible for Wisconsin. As you know, Wisconsin’s Governor has one of the most powerful veto pens in the country. Before signing the final 2021-23 state budget the Governor was able to make important changes.

The Governor signed the budget on Thursday morning after making some modifications with his powerful veto pen. One of the key partial vetoes made by Gov. Evers preserves $550 million that can be immediately used for investments in education and our state’s continued recovery. Wisconsin Assembly Democrats are committed to working with the Governor to get this funding to schools in order to supplement the gaps and shortfalls created by GOP budget action. Rep. Goyke's JFC Highlights

I am grateful to have had the opportunity to serve as the ranking Democrat on the Joint Committee on Finance and represent our community in this important role. The experience was sometimes stressful, but overall highly rewarding. The best part was getting to hear from all of you about your budget priorities - at our JFC Road Shows, on the Forward Wisconsin Budget Tour, via phone and email - and then getting to advocate for those priorities.
