The Goyke Report - Election 2018 Issue

Friends and Neighbors,

I hope this message finds you and your family well.

I am honored to represent our community again in the upcoming legislative session. As you may remember from my last update in the spring, due to rules regulating legislative offices during a campaign year, I have not been allowed to send an update until the conclusion of the election. I want to keep you updated on some of the election results and a breakdown of participation in the 18th Assembly District.

As always, I welcome any feedback or ideas you may have. Stay tuned for an update in the near future about further 2018 updates and legislative priorities going into the 2019-2020 legislative session. Please let me know if I can be of any assistance to you.

Statewide Election Results

Last week Democrats won five statewide races with four of those being a change in representation. These new constitutional officers are as follows:

Governor: Tony Evers

Lieutenant Governor: Mandela Barnes

Attorney General:  Josh Kaul

Secretary of State: Doug LaFollette

State Treasurer: Sarah Godlewski

Wisconsin Legislature

In the State Legislature Republicans retained majorities in the State Assembly and State Senate. The State Assembly had one seat change with State Representative-Elect Robyn Vining (D) winning in the open 14th Assembly District. The State Senate also had a seat change with State Senator-Elect Andre Jacque (R) winning in the 1st Senate District. The State Assembly is now currently controlled by Republicans 63-36 and the State Senate is controlled by Republicans 19-14.

What Happens Next?

Governor-Elect Evers will begin to work with outgoing Governor Scott Walker on the transition of Administrations. These transitions include a transition team, the formal inauguration, and the hiring/appointment of Cabinet Secretaries and staffing in respective offices and agencies. This process is underway and will continue into the new year. For those not familiar with this process I want to reassure you that my Representation of our community will not be disrupted and I stand ready to assist you in any way that I can with the outgoing and incoming administrations.

Following Inauguration Day in January of 2019, Governor Evers will introduce his proposed budget for 2019-2020.  Governor Evers will introduce his proposed budget through a public address, then the Legislature’s Joint Committee on Finance will debate, amend, and pass the budget.  With different parties in power, the process of agreeing on a budget may take some time.

The state legislature will continue to debate and pass laws.  Again, with a divided government, proposals will need Republican approval in the legislature and a signature by a Democratic Governor, making bipartisanship much more important than in the last several sessions.  I’ve worked hard to find common ground throughout my career and will continue to do so in the upcoming legislation session.

18th Assembly District Participation

Voter turnout in the 18th Assembly District was very strong this election cycle.

In 2014 total voter turnout in the 18th Assembly District was 19,995. In 2018 total voter turnout was slightly less at 19,626. This may be more attributable to changes in population than lack of voter participation.

However, when looking at specific Wards, in some cases, voter turnout was higher. For example, Ward 192 which is largely the Marquette University campus saw an increase of 204 votes cast this cycle compared to 2014.

No matter your political affiliation I thank you for your engagement in our democracy. It is vitally important.

I hope this update is helpful.  Please stay tuned for future updates this fall as preparation for the upcoming legislative session is underway.

Thank you!

Evan
