Dear Friend,

In response to COVID-19, I wanted to send an additional E-Newsletter to provide updates on early voting, preventative measures, and community resources. I want everyone to take this matter very seriously, but not to panic. The best thing we can do as a community is to stay prepared and informed. At this time, there are no plans to postpone Wisconsin’s primary on April 7th. The City of Milwaukee is taking extra steps to make voting safe and accessible; early voting in Milwaukee begins today.

Additionally, the Department of Health Services continues to provide updates on guidance for schools, childcare programs, and universities, tips on social distancing and traveling, as well as testing criteria. Secretary Designee Andrea Palm said in a press conference last week that DHS is monitoring the overall testing capacity for the state including private labs to ensure access as well as requesting supplies from the federal government when necessary.

On Friday, Milwaukee Public Schools made the difficult decision to close last Friday (3/13/20), prior to Governor Evers' announcement of the state-wide all schools shut down that begins on Wednesday (3/18/20). The district is taking extra steps to ensure that they continue to meet the needs of local families. Superintendent Dr. Keith Posley said that MPS will likely remain closed until at least April 14th.

Again, I want to urge everyone to take COVID-19 very seriously. This E-Update is meant to provide further details on the matters of voting, prevention, and resources, but should you have further questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to my office at (608) 266-0645.

Evan Goyke

Wisconsin Department of Health Services Updates on COVID-19
DHS continues to update its website with the most recent information relating to COVID-19. I recommend that individuals check regularly for updates and follow the prevention measures that DHS has provided. Other good sources to follow are the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization. Continue to monitor yourselves and others for symptoms and practice social distancing whenever possible.

Governor Evers issued an Executive Order today that prohibits gatherings of 50 or more people and requires bars and restaurants to operate at less than 50 percent capacity or have fewer than 50 people in the establishment.

MPS and Community Resources

Following the decision to close MPS schools on Friday and with a state-wide school shut down beginning this Wednesday, the district is working hard to continue to meet the needs of students and their families. Beginning today, the district will provide two meals at 20 distribution sites around the city from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. The meals will include lunch and breakfast items for the next morning. The sites will also provide daily learning materials that do not require the internet in order to help students meet learning objectives from home.

The Department of Public Instruction released information regarding the status of school closures and community operations in response to Governor Ever’s statewide school shut down here.
