Hello District 17,

State Representative Supreme Moore Omokunde here with my inaugural newsletter. First, I want to say that it is a distinct honor and privilege to represent Milwaukee, and specifically YOU, the constituents of the 17th District. This e-newsletter will be a great way to keep up with all of the things going on at the Wisconsin State Capitol in Madison that impact our district.

I serve on 4 committees here in Madison: Energy and Utilities, Mental Health, Regulatory Licensing Reform and Transportation. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, so my office is hyper-focused on addressing Mental Health legislation and events this month. Please join me and special guests for a virtual panel on Black Mental Wellness I am hosting on Thursday, May 27th at 6:00pm (more details below).

May has been an especially busy month for the Joint Finance Committee. Even though I personally do not serve on that committee, I have intently paid attention to proceedings to ensure that the issues District 17 cares most about are promptly funded in the Governor’s 2021-23 budget. See below for an update on the Governor’s budget proposal as it moves through the legislature.

Lastly, even with the CDC recently lifting many COVID-19 restrictions for vaccinated folks, I am asking our District to make sure we continue to wear masks when appropriate. If you have not yet received the free COVID-19 vaccine and are interested in receiving it, please see below for resources.

P.E.A.C.E.,

STATE CAPITOL LEGISLATIVE UPDATE - JOINT FINANCE COMMITTEE

Rep. Moore Omokunde speaks during a Voces de la Frontera rally at the Wisconsin State Capitol; May 6, 2021

A new legislative session means a new biennial budget for the State of Wisconsin. Governor Evers proposed a necessarily robust budget for 2021-23 that, amongst other things, seeks to do the following:

Unfortunately, my Republican colleagues in the Wisconsin State Legislature do not agree with Governor Evers about moving Wisconsin forward. Republicans on the Joint Finance Committee introduced Motion 19 earlier this month, which stripped nearly 400 items from the budget, including all of the items above. Additionally, Wisconsin Republicans removed every single item in the budget relating to creating a more equitable Wisconsin for all.

Personally, I am appalled (but not surprised) that my Republican colleagues care so little about equity and helping folks less fortunate than themselves to self-actualize. That said, it is important that We the People make our voices heard in opposition - as we did at the Voces de la Frontera protest inside the State Capitol on Thursday, May 6th.

I want to know what YOU think about the Joint Finance Committee budget proceedings - email me at rep.mooreomokunde@legis.wisconsin.gov to share your opinions and concerns.
