Wausau Homeless Advocate to be Named Assembly ‘Hometown Hero’

MADISON – The Wisconsin State Assembly will recognize James (Jim) Nick from Wausau, Wisconsin as an Assembly “Hometown Hero” at the upcoming Assembly floor session on November 7th.

Nick was nominated by his State Representative, Pat Snyder (R-Schofield), for his dedication to homeless students in the Wausau area. After learning about the number of homeless students in his community, Nick took it upon himself to begin a campaign to help those kids in need. In the 2016-2017 school year alone, Nick raised $117,000.

“With homelessness being an issue that I’ve worked on for years, I am so proud to have the Assembly host someone who is truly making a difference in his community,” said Assembly Majority Leader Jim Steineke (R-Kaukauna), who selected Nick to receive the award. “I admire his dedication to Wausau’s most vulnerable students.”

Beyond his fundraising, Nick formed an initiative called “Help the Kids,” which makes businesses and individuals aware of the homeless problem in Wausau students, giving them a path to help kids in need. Due to Nick’s dedication, countless student have received food, warm clothes, and school supplies.

“Jim has done outstanding work helping kids in our community that are experiencing homelessness. He has lead a community driven effort to provide students in the Wausau area with school supplies, warm winter clothes, and meals,” said Rep. Snyder. “It was my honor to nominate him as a Hometown Hero, so he can get the recognition he deserves for his service to our community.”

The Wisconsin State Assembly sees giving back to the community as one of the most valuable characteristics one can have. The Assembly Hometown Heroes program seeks to identify and recognize individuals from around the state who give of themselves to make a difference in our communities and in the lives of those around them. Hometown Hero Award winners are invited and introduced as a special guest at an Assembly floor session and given the opportunity to speak.
