Speaker’s Task Force on Racial Disparities Holds First Meeting

MADISON – The Speaker’s Task Force on Racial Disparities met for the first time today, paving the way for forthcoming discussions and legislative recommendations. The 32-member group had attendees join both in-person and virtually, discussing the topics they would like to see the task force focus on in the coming months.

“Having a group of people that comes from so many walks of life and has such diverse personal experiences, I am confident they will be able to better inform our conversations and ultimately our legislative recommendations,” said Rep. Steineke (R-Kaukauna), Co-Chair of the task force. “I am honored to be a part of this historic group of legislators, advocates, and stakeholders who are committed to tackling issues of racial disparity here in Wisconsin.”

Assembly Speaker Robin Vos (R-Rochester) created the Speaker’s Task Force on Racial Disparities earlier this fall, with an intent to address racial disparities, educational opportunities, public safety, and law enforcement policies and standards. The group plans to meet again soon to further delve into the issues at hand.

“I appreciate Speaker Vos bringing us together to have hard, but necessary conversations surrounding racial disparity in Wisconsin,” continued Rep. Steineke. “In the coming weeks, I look forward to working with my colleagues to move the needle on these critically important issues.”
